Peer Approaches to Lupus Self- Management (PALS) study at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).
March 2020-December 2020
I assisted as an intern for Dr. Edith Williams lupus study for the 180 African American female patients selected and added to the lupus database at the Medical University of South Carolina. Mentors are trained and assigned to the participants; they are constantly in contact with the participants by telephone for at the most 60 minutes for the duration of the study which is 12 weeks. Disease activity will be collected by both the physician assessment and patient-reported outcome measure using both The Systemic Lupus Activity Questionnaire (SLAQ) and the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) which is collected routinely at the participants doctor's visit. These assessments will be used to aid in the collection of data from the participants on self-management, symptoms that they may be experiencing, disease outcomes and progression. Disease activity will be collected using qualitative data over the course of the study with weekly check. Qualitative data will be collected throughout the study to better assess the benefits of peer-mentorship.
