I started out halfway through my senior year in high school as a part-time food manufacturer and warehouse assistant. Much like my summer job it continued to teach me the value of manual labor and I was talking to my superiors often to gain insights on the realities of business, supply, and distribution. When the summer started I took a full-time job in Direct to Consumer shipping. Full time meant getting up at 4:30 A.M. every morning for 3-4 days a week and working until 6:30 P.M.
This job required that I stand for those 12 hours all day, every day, further reinforcing my hard work ethic. After only a couple of months, my work ethic landed me a raise of $2 an hour extra. This last job was crucial before I left for college because It taught me that I should work hard and do better than menial labor my entire life.
This summer job before my senior year in high school taught me the value of hard manual labor. I would regularly rise at 6:00 A.M. to work before the worst of the midday heat. My responsibilities included hours of log peeling and even more weed whacking in the construction site to combat the constant fire risks of the dry Oregon summer. Off-site I worked on the refurbishment of a log house. I learned to use heavy-powered tools like the Osborn brush as well as deck building. After tearing apart and rebuilding the front and back decks I applied the wood stain with meticulous care to end my work with a degrading log cabin regaining its beauty.
Schatz Pretzel was a food truck and my first job. It's here I learned the skills of monetary handling, food sanitation safety, and customer interaction. I worked shifts in a rented kitchen producing homemade pretzels for the business. The truck was present in many festivals and events during my tenure. I handled many interactions with disgruntled customers with patience and clarity. The job also taught me to keep my cool during bouts of long lines as our homemade pretzels were a must-have on the street.
