Work History
Banfield Pet Hospital - Field Attorney
Bakersfield, CA, 07/1966 - 08/1969
  • Upon graduation from law school, I was employed as a field attorney by the National Labor Relations Board at its Regional Office located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
  • During my time at the NLRB, I received extensive training and experience relative to the internal procedures and operations of a federal administrative agency tasked with the enforcement of federal law; specifically, the National Labor Relations Act.
  • My training and experience included investigation of disputed facts as well as analysis of complex issues arising from unfair labor practice claims made to the agency and, if warranted, administrative prosecution in accordance with established governmental procedures.
  • In most cases, my duties as field attorney and later as a hearing officer required extensive legal research, written reporting and documentation and, more often than not, evaluation of complex credibility issues.

Banfield Pet Hospital - Partner
Bel Air, MD, 09/1969 - 11/1985
  • Sometime in the fall of 1969, I was recruited by a private law firm in Pittsburgh to manage its emerging law practice, specifically its representation of businesses and individual employers in need of labor and employment expertise.
  • At the time, because of my extensive trial experience at the NLRB, I was also asked to join in the law firm's extensive litigation practice, including civil and criminal trials. During this time, in addition to my growing case load, I was the principal second chair attorney to the chief trial attorney at the firm.
  • Over the next fifteen years as a partner of the firm, I developed a practice representing business men and women with regard to a wide variety of labor and employment issues and began to expand my representation of large and medium size business entities and individual entrepreneurs involving their often complex and contentions business disputes.
  • In addition, during this phase of my career, I also represented a variety of clients claimed to have committed unfair or tortuous business practices, many of which involving restrictive covenants or other employer/employee issues or contractual provisions.
  • During the course of my practice, I gained extensive experience as lead counsel in jury and non jury trials,  and in the arbitration and/or mediation of disputes.

Astor, Weiss & Newman, P.C - Partner, Chairman, Litigation Department
City, STATE, 1986 - 03/1996
After moving to Philadelphia and accepting a partnership at Astor Weiss & Newman, I accepted the added responsibility of managing the law firm's litigation practice while continuing to provide a wide range of professional services to the firm's labor/employer relations and business practice. As in the past, I continued to have close interpersonal contact with clients during which I counseled them regarding available strategies and the possible repercussions of of strategic choices. Moreover,my added responsibility allowed me to develop strategies and techniques specifically tailored cases under my departmental supervision as well as my own. Many of these cases involved extensive negotiation with opposing counsel, competing businesses, federal and state governmental agencies, and other professionals having a role in the particular matter.
Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads, LLP - Partner
City, STATE, 04/1996 - 01/2014
After my recruitment as a Partner at Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads, I continued to develop my labor/employment and business practice, utilizing both my extensive experience and knowledge as well as my expanded role counselling clients regarding compliance with federal and state workplace and business laws and regulations. Much of the counselling involved strategies for risk reduction and avoidance of adverse consequences relative to business and workplace choices. Much of my practice involved the evaluation and understanding necessitated by the enactment and/or expansion of federal and state laws involving workplace disputes, particularly disputes arising under the various civil rights acts and legislation protecting employees against discrimination because of age, sexual orientation, sexual harassment and violence, physical and mental disabilities, family leave issues, as well as business issues involving indiscretions committed at the executive level of client businesses. I provided direct assistance to business owners, executives, and middle level management, particularly in the human resource/personnel fields, regarding the implementation of statutory and regulatory compliance, policies, work rules, and other means of compliance and risk avoidance.

Litchfield Cavo, LLP - Of Counsel
City, STATE, 02/2014 - Current

  • Litchfield Cavo, LLP has offices throughout the country representing mainly insurance companies, many of which insure employers for the type of risk associated with general business exposure and the workplace environment.
