Professional Summary

The research projects within my group focus on identifying pathways of the innate and adaptive immune response that underpin the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases and regulation of tumor immunosurveillance. I am currently Head of Adaptive Tumor Immunity and Principal Scientist in Cancer Immunology Discovery Research at Genentech, and oversee the neoantigen vaccine and cell therapy efforts. My research focuses predominantly on mechanisms of T cell activation, tolerance-induction and epigenetic modifiers, using integrative approaches, combining bioinformatics, biology and diagnostics. My lab has identified key regulators of effector and regulatory T cells, and has moved multiple targets into clinical development for Autoimmune and Oncology indications: including anti-lymphotoxin in rheumatoid arthritis; and anti-TIGIT for cancer immunotherapy. I have led multiple projects from Research through Early Development and clinical trials in immunology and oncology, coordinating across cross-functional teams both nationally and internationally. I have filed multiple patents, INDs and have interacted with FDA for various clinical programs. My current role also includes liaising with our Business Partnering group to run diligence on external opportunities within immunology and oncology. I present regularly at international conferences and have organized/chaired multiple meetings including Keystone Symposia and the annual FOCIS meeting. Additionally, I am on the Advisory Board of Sustainable Science Institute – a non-profit organization that supports scientists and public health communities in resource-poor settings. I also host a science podcast, Two Scientists Walk Into A Bar, currently enjoyed by >300,000 listeners.
