Research Assistant for Dr. Wendy Hood, I provided research on āThe Effects of Parasites and Nutrition of Ornamental Coloration in the American Goldfinches.ā What we hope to achieve from this project is to find out if the body composition of the American Goldfinch correlates with a parasite, which is known to decrease the intensity of the Aves feathers. Over one hundred goldfinches have been captured in Austin Texas that will be used to conduct our experiments. In the meantime, we are using our own collection of birds to perfect our techniques prior to the arrival of the gold finches. This is an ongoing research project that is scheduled to be completed in August of 2005.
Stem Cell Research, Ms. Yolanda MacKinnon, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada Summer 2003. The Stem Cell Research program was conducted as part of a Genesis Genomics Inc.ās initiative. Ms. Yolanda MacKinnon headed up the collection of survey results that were provided to new mothers regarding their views on donating umbilical cords for the use of bone marrow transplantation purposes. On a weekly basis, I would collect the surveys that were returned and tabulate the results. I would then present the results in a report format in order for Ms. MacKinnon to make her presentation to the Genesis Genomics board members.
Volunteer, Dr. Carney Matheson, Paleo DNA Laboratory, Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, ON, Canada, Summer 2003. Dr. Matheson, originally from Australia, joined Lakehead Universityās Science Department with a mission of providing one of the top ancient DNA Laboratories in North America at the time. Some of his works include the discovery and carbon dating of the famous āBog Body.ā He also contributed in identifying the family origin of the āunknown child of the Titanicā.
