Experience
Princeton University Faculty - Postdoctoral Associate
Princeton, NJ, 08/2022 - Current

I am currently working in Dr. Ross's Lab at the Center for Vaccine and Immunology of College of Veterinary Medicine, UGA. I have been working on several projects, including the development of a computationally optimized broadly reactive Ags (COBRA) H3N2 swine influenza vaccine to be tested in mice, as well as the evaluation of two vaccine platforms for COBRA-based human seasonal H1N1 and H3N2 influenza vaccines, Chimpanze adenovirus vectors and self-amplifying mRNA vaccine (SAM)-based vaccines.

University Of Kansas Medical Center - ACVM Veterinary Microbiology Resident/Postdoctoral Associate
Larned, KS, 08/2019 - 05/2022
  • As an ACVM Resident I was exposed to a broad case load from food animals and companion animals, as well as wildlife/exotic animals submissions received at the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (AVDL) from the entire state of Georgia and out-of-state clientele. I was actively involved and responsible to educate submitter veterinarians to choose the correct diagnostic test and to correctly interpret the results. I worked on development and validation of molecular assays for the diagnosis of viral agents, as well as I was responsible for writing the related standard operating procedures. I developed an enrichment approach specific for next generation sequencing of canine respiratory coronavirus from biological specimens. I was actively involved in the proficiency test performed on samples submitted from the United States Department of Agriculture of Athens, Georgia, United States.
  • In addition, I have been working on several research projects, including the i) genetic characterization of a new adenovirus species in whales, ii) a comprehensive genomic characterization and evolutionary analysis of a new Pasteurellaceae member, which was associated with mortality events in seabirds, iii) investigation of the role of gamma herpesviruses in the development of pulmonary fibrosis in donkeys iv) epidemiological survey on upper respiratory tract disease (URTD) pathogens in cats aiming at evaluating the molecular prevalence of known URTD pathogens and the role of different Mycoplasma species in the development of feline respiratory disease; v) a large epidemiological survey on respiratory canine coronavirus (CRCoV) aiming at evaluating its prevalence in Southeast USA, the evolutionary genetics of CRCoV strains identified in different years and their relationship with those from Europe and Asia.
College Of Veterinary Medicine Of Teramo-Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute (IZSAM) Of Teramo - PhD Student
City, STATE, 11/2015 - 05/2019
  • PhD student of the “Veterinary Medical Sciences, Public Health and Animal Welfare” PhD program at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (University of Teramo, Italy) and at the Virology Department of the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute (IZSAM) of Teramo (Italy).
  • PhD project: Study of Feline Morbillivirus (FeMV) infection in Italy: Epidemiology and molecular epidemiology, clinical and pathological aspects in domestic cats.
  • FeMV is a paramyxovirus associated with tubulointerstitial nephritis in domestic cats, which has been also recently detected in non-domestic felids (tigers and leopards), and in non-feline hosts (e.g., opossum). The PhD research was focused on the evaluation of FemV epidemiology in Italy, genetic characterization of the FeMV strains detected, viral tropism in vitro, clinical and pathological aspects observed in naturally infected cats. I published six original research papers and a review paper on FeMV.
  • As PhD student, I developed a quantitative RT-PCR assay for FeMV and an enrichment approach used for the next generation sequencing of FeMV biological specimens.
Poultry Diagnostic And Research Center At The College Of Veterinary Medicine, University Of Georgia - PhD Student (Exchange Visitor)
City, STATE, 01/2018 - 07/2018
  • Exchange Visitor at the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center (PDRC), Department of Population Health of College of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Georgia (USA).
  • Following several severe High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza outbreaks caused by a subtype H7N3 (A/H7N3) in Mexico, there was an increasing interest in developing a specific vaccine. A live attenuated influenza vaccine, which may provide a broader immune response by eliciting also a mucosal immunity was developed using the reverse genetics technique. Two different approaches were evaluated to obtain viruses with an attenuated phenotype: i) insertion of temperature-sensitive mutations in the polymerase subunits and ii) genomic modifications of the M and NS segments.
