Digital marketing in the 21st century bears little resemblance to pre-digital marketing of the 20th century. It is now more about pull than push. Online and mobile technology have made promotions and publicity less important, replacing them with personalization and placement.
Some of the most common digital marketing career options involve acquiring traffic and moving it through various marketing funnels, including SEO/SEM, paid traffic and affiliate programs. Overseeing and directing these operations are other career options, including site optimization, marketing analytics and digital marketing strategy.
Digital content is an entire dimension unto itself, and includes content creators along with strategists. Digital content also includes connecting with customers through email, social media and online communities, which are handled by content and community managers respectively.
Keep in mind that digital marketing often requires cross-training. For example, content writers also need analytical skills, as they will be working regularly with software tools that measure content effectiveness. Depending on whether the product is an online service, digital marketers might also do double duty as product managers or marketers.
