Your interview may also ask you what your current salary is. If you can, politely dodge the question, especially if it isn't legal to ask it in your state. You can say that you're open to a competitive offer with a new company and that your current salary doesn't play a big role in your decision about a new company. If you are underpaid and don't want to continue being underpaid in a new position, you can also state simply that your current compensation doesn't represent the current market. Whatever you do, never lie about how much money you make.
