This section is your opener and should contain your ‘purpose’ or interest statement that explains why you would be interested in the job posting or the company. Make sure to reference keywords and statements from the job description.

How to Write a Steward Cover Letter

The following cover letter example will help you identify the key sections in a cover letter and what to include in each one.

Lorem ipsum

Now that you know what a cover letter should look like, let's go into further detail on how to tailor your cover letter to your steward role.

STEP 1

Format your cover letter’s header correctly

Every steward cover letter should include a header that follows the standard business letter format. Include the date, the recipient's name and info and a formal greeting.

Strong cover letter header example:

April 10, 2025

Mr. Robert Johnson

Operations Manager

Mariner's Retreat Resort

1234 Oceanview Drive

Seaside, OR 97138

Dear Mr. Johnson,

Weak cover letter header example:

April 09, 2025
To whom it may consern,
Mr. Jayden Smoth
Assistant Seward
Seaward Explorers, Inc.
123 Oceanview Dr
Suite 404, Springville, OS 54321
Lena Timpsons
52223 Oceen Drive
Reef Town, EG 98765

(123) 456-7890

PRO TIP

If you can't find the hiring manager's name, never use the generic “To Whom It May Concern.“ There are better ways to address a cover letter without a name, such as “Dear Hiring Manager.“

STEP 2

Introduce yourself in the opening paragraph

The way you introduce yourself to hiring managers in your cover letter's opening paragraph will set the tone for the rest of your letter. Stand out by mentioning key skills and qualifications, and state your interest in the particular steward position.

Strong opening paragraph example:

As a current hospitality attendant with five years of experience in the travel industry, I am thrilled to apply for the steward position at Pacific Cruises. My background in customer service has equipped me for this role, especially through my management of onboard guest experiences. Recently, I achieved a 20% increase in customer satisfaction ratings by enhancing service protocols and personalizing guest interactions.

Weak opening paragraph example:

Hi, I’m really interested in the steward position at TravelStar. I have dabbled in various roles and picked up some skills that I think could be useful here. Looking forward!

PRO TIP

If a current employee has referred you for the position, mentioning it here can make a big difference. Check out our article on referral cover letter openings for examples of how to do this effectively.

STEP 3

Share relevant achievements in the body paragraph

Your cover letter's body paragraph should be chock-full of relevant achievements and skills. However, avoid repeating what you said in your resume. You can also take this opportunity to show recruiters you're a great cultural fit in the company by sharing more details about who you are as a person.

Check icon

Strong body paragraph example:

In my previous role as a steward, I effectively managed inventory, leading to a 15% reduction in costs over six months while ensuring a seamless dining experience. My ability to multitask efficiently allowed me to serve up to 100 guests per event, consistently receiving positive feedback on service quality. By focusing on attention to detail and excellent communication, I successfully addressed and resolved customer issues promptly. I look forward to bringing my organizational and customer service skills to your team.

Cross icon

Weak body paragraph example:

I am seeking a steward position because I need a career in hospitality and believe I can do it. Although I lack a lot of specific experience or achievements in this area, I'm willing to try and improve. Confidence isn’t my strongest point, but I am motivated to learn and adapt to succeed.

STEP 4

Finish by encouraging next steps

The closing paragraph will be the final section of your steward cover letter. Use this section to share any final skills or qualifications you possess and state your interest in a future interview. Go for confident tone and proper sign-off before signing your name.

Check icon

Strong closing paragraph:

I am eager to bring my exceptional interpersonal skills and attention to detail to the steward role at Atlantic Hospitality Group, where I can enhance the guest experience with my dedication and professionalism. I am keen to discuss how my qualifications align with your needs in an interview. Thank you for considering my application; I appreciate your time.
Best regards,
Michael Anderson

Weak closing paragraph:

I believe I could probably do well as a steward at your company, even though I'm not exactly sure what skills are needed. I'm eager to hear back if you think I'd work out okay in the role. Thanks for considering my application, despite my lack of confidence in my ability.
Yours truly,
Alex Parker
