STEP 1
Format your cover letter’s header correctly
Every author cover letter should include a header that follows the standard business letter format. Include the date, the recipient's name and info and a formal greeting.
Strong cover letter header example:
May 09, 2025
Mr. Richard Nelson, Editorial Manager
Penguin Random House
1745 Broadway, New York, NY 10019
Dear Mr. Nelson,
Weak cover letter header example:
Date: 13/45/2023
To whom it may concern,
Alx Murphy
4321 Fictional Ave, Ste 98
Adobe Publishers

Phone: 123-456-7890

PRO TIP
Addressing your letter's recipient by name is a sure way to show your attention to detail. Avoid generic greetings such as “To Whom It May Concern.“ Check out more appropriate greeting options in our guide for addressing a cover letter without a name.
STEP 2
Introduce yourself in the opening paragraph
The first paragraph of your cover letter should serve as an introduction to recruiters and explicitly state your interest in the position. Make a memorable impression by describing yourself with key skills or unique achievements that show you're the perfect candidate for the author role.
Strong opening paragraph example:
As a freelance writer with over five years of experience in crafting compelling narratives, I am excited to apply for the author position at Narrative Press. My passion for storytelling and attention to detail has prepared me for this role, demonstrated by my recent accomplishment of publishing a novel that sold over 10,000 copies within the first three months. I'm eager to contribute to your dynamic team.
Weak opening paragraph example:
Hey there! I'm buzzing to apply for the author role at Fiction House. Always been a fan of writing since forever, and it's my passion. I feel it's totally a match for me!

STEP 3
Share relevant achievements in the body paragraph
Your cover letter's body paragraph should consist of one or two paragraphs — or even bullet points — sharing what makes you the ideal candidate for the author role. Ensure you include relevant quantifiable achievements and more insight into who you are as a professional.
Strong body paragraph example:
With over five years of professional writing experience, I authored three novels, two of which became bestsellers, increasing sales by 40% year-over-year. My success lies in my strong storytelling abilities and meticulous attention to detail, crafting narratives that captivate readers. Through collaboration and leadership, I directed a writing workshop that boosted participants' publication rates by 25%, demonstrating my commitment to fostering talent in myself and others within the literary community.
Weak body paragraph example:
I am looking for an author position because I need a job that aligns with my interest. I want to write and I've done some creative work before, but not much published. I believe I can improve and offer value. I'm hoping to find an opportunity where I can grow. If given a chance, I’ll do my best to meet expectations.
STEP 4
Finish by encouraging next steps
Your cover letter's final paragraph should summarize what makes you an ideal candidate and expressly mention you're eager for the opportunity and a future job interview. Remember to close with an appropriate sign-off and sign with your name.
Strong closing paragraph:
With a proven track record in creative writing and a deep understanding of storytelling techniques, I am eager to bring my skills to enhance the literary team at HarperCollins. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute to your esteemed publication during an interview. Thank you for considering my application. Your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Alex Greenwood
Weak closing paragraph:
I hope I could possibly contribute as an author at your company. I'm enthusiastic and eager to try new things, although I'm not sure if my background fits perfectly. If you think I might be suitable, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks for considering my application.
Best regards,
Jessica Miller
