Professional Experience
Vice President of Engineering, 03/2023 - Current
Consumeraffairs Chicago, IL,

I was promoted into the role of Vice President of Engineering at Optica Technologies in March of 2023. This transition has allowed me to shift my focus into higher level product strategies and direction, optimizing manufacturing and improving aspects of our company's engineering processes.

Senior Software Engineer, 01/2006 - 03/2023
Tapjoy San Francisco, CA,

I left Cisco for Optica to broaden my skill set. I wanted to learn more about data storage protocols (i.e. FICON, ESCON, SCSI, etc.) and general embedded systems concepts for both hardware and software. While working at Optica, I took classes toward my M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering. This allowed me to directly apply the concepts I was learning in school to the job. In addition, the “soft lines” between the engineering teams, technical sales teams and support teams allowed me to become a hybrid engineer with experience and skill in multiple areas. In over 20 years of computer engineering and support work, I’ve worn several hats. I’ve been intimately involved with every aspect of the software life cycle - from hardware interface design, through Linux device drivers implementations, to vast Linux Operating Systems experience ultimately leading to managing entire product life cycles multiple times.

In my last eight years at Optica, I have been responsible for the design, architecture and implementation of a product called zVT. This product is used in IBM Mainframe environments as a “virtual tape” device. It looks and acts like a tape drive to the mainframe using FICON connectivity on the front end but is actually high performance data storage on the back end. It allows existing, legacy IBM software applications on the mainframe to achieve high levels of I/O performance and convenience by connecting with the latest in data storage technologies such as NAS, Cloud, iSCSI, Fibre channel and other SAN technologies.

Prior to zVT, I developed Linux Kernel module code to support a proprietary embedded system used for encrypting tapes connected to an IBM mainframe over an Escon link. Optica named this product Eclipz. I was one of the inventors listed on our patent that was granted for this product.

In addition to my work on zVT and Eclipz, I've worked on many other smaller software projects like device drivers for FICON and ESCON cards, porting our software to various Linux operating systems, and enhancing legacy software products with new features and other improvements.

Software Engineer Developer, 06/2001 - 01/2006
Fidelity Investments Paradise Valley, AZ,

I joined Cisco shortly after graduating from Montana Tech. I was quickly promoted from a Software Engineer Level1 to a Level4 in the 4+ years that I was there.

I led a team responsible for porting a significant portion of Cisco's CallManager source base from the Windows platform to Linux. This work required much cross-team collaboration along with a rich understanding of the CallManager code. This work included improving the development environment for CallManager Linux engineers given their background in Windows programming environments.

I was the lead programmer on several C and C++ features within the Cisco CallManager product.
