Over the years I have gotten the opportunity to take part in a variety of therapeutic programs. Most recently, I was able to participate in a program called My Heroes Therapy which is a group that will become part of Colorado State University's Temple Grandin Equine Center. What this program has allowed me to do is take part in a wider range of therapies including physical, occupational, and speech therapies. My experience there has pushed me further into understanding my purpose in this world. Seeing the way these individuals respond to these animals versus more traditional therapists is amazing. With all of these experiences, I've chosen to base my career in equine assisted psychotherapy with a specialization in post-traumatic stress disorder.
While at Colorado State University, I have also had the privilege of assisting in Dr. Michael Steger's Laboratory for the Study of Meaning and Quality of Life as well as his Positive Psychology course. For every lab I run, I get to work directly with participants during these labs. I predominantly instruct the participants on how to complete different tasks as well as collecting data from these tasks. Practicing in research has taught me proper procedures to obtain data, how to input data that has been collected, and how to pay attention to detail. It is fascinating work and has given me a lot of first-hand knowledge about motivation which I would one day like to use in my own therapy. With regard to teaching, I was able to grade all major assignments which concerned how to improve the quality of one's life through many different practices. I was also able to run the lab portions of the class. I would be assigned a group of students for the semester and would help facilitate community-based activities aimed in the implementation of psychological approaches.
All of this has given me a strong foundation of knowledge along with confirmation of what I want to accomplish in my life. Overall, everything I have been privileged enough to take part in has done nothing but allow me to continue to fulfill what I truly believe is my purpose in this world.
