Yale University West Haven, CT,
  • Salmonella uptake by lettuce following irrigation with recycled wastewater, 2012 to present 1. Evaluated the biodiversity of the native microbial community in rhizosphere soil and lettuce root influenced by irrigation water containing Salmonella using Next Generation Sequencing (Illumina) 2. Analyzed sequence data using statistical methods (distance matrix, Adonis/Anosim, simulation, SourceTracker and others) on Qiime and R 3. Investigated the global protein modulation in both Salmonella and lettuce upon the internalization of the human pathogen into the plant hosts using quantitative proteomics 4. Quantified the probability of Salmonella internalization into lettuce grown under optimal and stressed conditions.
  • Kinetics and pathways of sulfonamide biodegradation by soil bacteria, 2013 to present 1. Characterize microbial and sulfonamide degradation kinetics. 2. Analyze sulfonamide degradation products using LC-MS/MS. 3. Evaluate mass balance using liquid scintillation counting.
  • Fate of antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in the agricultural wastewater, 2010 to 2012 1. Quantified antimicrobials in water and sediment of livestock wastewater lagoons using LC-MS/MS. 2. Quantified antibiotic resistance genes utilizing real-time PCR 3. Estimated the contribution of extracellular DNA to the total ARG pool
