As a Writing Tutor, I worked in Flagler College's “Writing Center,” which is a part of the school's free student-tutoring enterprise, “The Learning Resource Center.” In order to begin working there, I had to first complete a training course that taught the requirements of being an effective tutor. Most importantly, the class taught how to engage with students during their sessions, emphasizing the gravity of guiding the students and leading their work in the right direction, while ensuring that they always feel comfortable, understood, and unjudged. My purpose as a Writing Tutor was to, of course, aid students in becoming better writers, but it was critical to do while ensuring that they always felt supported, rather than criticized. Speaking to them in an encouraging, not condescending, tone when they ask questions or do not understand is the key to their success. I apply this golden rule in every aspect of dealing with students or guests in any of my work.
I worked for a summer as a nanny for a family with three children, ages ranging from three to ten years. This job required 12 hours a day of organization, patience, time-management, and problem-solving. My goal was to balance the many activities, differing personalities, and household responsibilities in a way that always exceeded what was asked and expected of me. I learned how to be a few steps ahead at all times, how to compromise, and how to fit fun into even the tightest of schedules. Of course, I had to accomplish all of this without showing the stress or pressure I was feeling, and while always keeping safety paramount. For the children, who have such hectic lives, I wanted to create a magical summer, and for the parents, who captain those hectic lives, strove to instill the trust and reassurance that their most precious gifts were in capable hands. I have also continued part-time nannying for multiple families during my school breaks, allowing me to work with children of all ages and backgrounds. I have acquired many strategies along the way to divert and entertain, while simultaneously creating an environment of warmth and learning.
