Care of woman during pregnancy who are experiencing complications or at risk for complications to herself or her infant. Duties included bedside care in a primary nursing setting, assessment including electronic fetal monitering. Also reviewing plan of care with patient and healthcare team as needed. Also administering medications as ordered including high risk medications eg. IV magnesium sulfate, insulin, heparin, and labatelol. Ongoing education regarding diagnosis , care plan and discharge planning also carried out throughout stay.
Primary Labor and Delivery nurse caring for patient throughout labor, then delivery and recovery, assisting patient, infant and family as needed as well as MDs attending patient and family.Also circulated in OR for Cesarean sections as necessary. Performed orientation and teaching function throughout patient stay. Also performed postpartum and well baby duties as necessitated by unit demands.
Full scope Nurse Midwifery duties including prenatal care and screening, pap smears, NSTs, hospital priviledges and coprescribing medications with covering MD. Attending births both in the birth center and hospital. Involvement of education and preparation of patient for childbirth throughout pregnancy and delivery, then infant care and self care thereafter.
Staff duties in primary nurse setting on unit giving care to patients on cardiac telemetry after discharge from ICU. Also mixed population of medical clients with diagnoses such as CVA, pneumonia, uncontrolled Diabetes Mellitus or COPD. Later transferred to Obstetrics in 1987 where I began training as a postpartum and labor and delivery nurse .
Course taken were Master level courses. Students accepted were Obstetrical nurses with prescribed clinical experience. Became eligible for the national Board exam taken by all midwives for certification and passed.
This certification is not current presently.
After completion of program was licensed by New Jersey State board of Nursing after passing State Board exam.
Completion of course of study enabled me to sit for LPN Florida State Board exams for licensure , which I passed.
