Since I have always been interested in activities that offer opportunities for helping people, I volunteered at Dr. Carmen Molina's practice (Amedica Children's Center, Inc) in Hialeah. The purpose of this activity was twofold, to use my time assisting the sick children and their parents, and to gain experience working in a medical environment. I really enjoyed that even with my limited knowledge I was able to make a difference in the daily routine of the center.
In my opinion, physician shadowing is one of the best extracurricular activities in which a pre-medical student can engage. I can emphatically state that one of the major reasons why I want to be a physician is due to my shadowing experience with Dr. Robert Gutierrez.
Shadowing and observing the physician's daily routine with his patients.
Interacting with the physician discussing medical treatment and controversial topics.
Closely examined patients' medical history, medication allergies, physical condition and test results to verify necessity of procedures and treatment.
Consistently obeyed all established medical techniques and facility standard operating procedures.
Assisting and educating parents.
Assisting with clerical responsibilities including filing, answering phones, and other office functions requested by the staff.
