As a sports writer for the OU Daily I gained valuable experience working in a newsroom setting. I was given the opportunity to cover men's gymnastics, women's and men's basketball as well as spring football. This job required me to attend all media availabilities, practices and home games and often required I write and publish stories remotely on a tight deadline. Outside of the regular routine practice and game stories I was given the freedom to write long form features of my choosing over athletes and coaches that I covered. This experience assisted me in sharpening my interpersonal and creative writing skills and better prepared me for a career in community journalism.
During my internship with the OU Athletic Department I worked in an office setting within the communications department under the Sports Information Director. This job required me to attend games and assist media personnel with any issues that arose during events as well as other tasks like taking and researching stats, writing media guides, editing documents, operating stadium scoreboards and running stats to members of the media during breaks and timeouts. This experience gave me valuable skills such as writing in AP style, editing documents, researching stats, maintaining professionalism and learning more about the relationship between journalists and sports media relations.
During high school I was hired by my hometown's local newspaper to write stories about high school athletes in my area. This was my first experience working as journalist and I was able to teach myself how to find stories and interview sources to meet my requirement of writing two biographies over a male and female athlete each week.
My interest in journalism began at an early age which led me searching for ways to get experience in the field. As a freshman in high school I was given permission from the school's athletic director to become the PA announcer for football and soccer games and did this on a weekly basis throughout my four years of high school. This opportunity gave me experience in public speaking, particularly in front of large audiences.
During my junior year I helped my high school create it's first-ever live broadcast for high school basketball games. I produced, filmed and provided commentary for these live streams on both home and away games. These streams were broadcasted on highschoolcube.com and drew in parents and fans of the men and women's basketball teams that would have been otherwise unable to watch these events. My ambition and hard-work earned me recognition from my local radio station which allowed me to fill in on radio color-commentating duties for a few basketball and football games.
I chose my degree program based on two fields of study that I thought were important for a career in journalism: broadcast journalism and sociology. My time in Gaylord College of Mass Communications gave me both experience and understanding of the field of journalism. My classes gave me a first-hand experience of how to produce broadcast stories at the OU Nightly. The OU Nightly produces news broadcast every evening which taught me both how to find short stories that are filmed and edited in a day as well as longer form stories that cover bigger issues. I learned how to operate broadcast cameras and tell stories from a visual perspective.
My sociology major equipped me to better understand the way societies operate which has undeniably given me more insight when telling stories in journalism.
