I am a hands-on, dedicated science teacher that brings 21 years of teaching experience at the high school level. In addition to Biology I also teach Forensics (a course I developed and designed almost all of the curriculum for) and Chemistry. I also co-teach a cross-curricular course entitled "Mythbusters" with the goal of teaching students independent thinking, researching and experimental design skills to separate fact from fiction. I have also taught Anatomy and Physiology, Ecology, Earth Science and Freshman Physics. In addition to teaching, I have also spent the majority of the last 18 years of my career as a co-advisor for the Gender Sexuality Alliance here at the high school. We push for a more inclusive environment and curriculum for our LGBTQ+ students.
When developing curriculum and lessons, I really strive for learner-centered activities/lessons. Some examples of learner-centered activities I use in my lesson planning include student discussion panels, student designed laboratory experiments, and explicit skill development. I also use lessons that encourage free thinking and problem solving skills.
I only recently heard about reDesign and was struck by your commitment to social justice. Growing up, I was the student who didn't have enough to eat, weather appropriate clothing to wear and a good support system at home. Luckily I had a few teachers that went above and beyond to help me develop the skills to be successful; unfortunately I have many students that I can see myself in, and need the extra support and understanding, while simultaneously being pushed to do the best they can. As much as my school system wants to believe that we're doing all that we can, more needs to be done as for the marginalized students who walk into my classroom. Students have a right to an equitable and fair education, to be able to see themselves in the curriculum they're learning. I feel that your organization not only encourages it, but insist on it.
