While in college I worked two jobs which I currently still work. I work at Paychoice, payroll company, doing office administrative work. I have been employed here since 2007. I also run a before and after school program for the YMCA out of the Duval Elementary School in Whitman, Ma. This job has taught me a lot about patience and about how to handle and deal with different behaviors and attitudes. This job has given me strategies to utilize if I become a full-time police officer in the future. I think that working with children you have to be able to handle a lot of different conflict situations and utilize problem solving techniques every day. It has taught me that you need to see both sides of the story to understand and put together what really happened in different situations. The techniques and situations I have dealt with while working with children for 4 years at the YMCA, and previously 3 Years for the B.A.S.E program in Bridgewater, Ma, will be useful in dealing with the public as a police officer. I also currently work as a reserve police officer for the town of Somerset, Ma. I graduated from the S.E.M.P.T.A. Basic Reserve/Intermittent Academy in August 2012. I have been working and volunteering for ride-alongs as much as I can with the Somerset Police Department. I have been enrolled in dispatch training, including EMD training, for the upcoming months as well. The time I have spent volunteering and working with the officers in this department has shown me that this is something that I really want to do. The reason I want to be a police officer is because it is a job that a lot of people could not handle. You deal with a lot of stressful situations, work long hours, and put your life at risk in many different situations throughout the work day. Yes, as I have seen, there is a lot of paperwork and report writing as well, but that is just part of the job. I need a job career that will not bore me for doing the same thing every day. A police officer gets in his cruiser everyday and may face a lot of action or no action at all, but it changes every day. I like not knowing what could occur throughout the day and the need to be ready for anything. I feel as though my academic background, job experience, and police training have really prepared me for becoming a police officer. I am a dedicated and hardworking individual. I am dependable and reliable individual that gets things done. If I can't answer a question or a problem you can be sure that I will do everything I can to find the answer or solution. Skills: Strategic thinker with ability to understand the big picture, quickly assess issues and determine a course of action that leads to operations being completed efficient and effectively. Ability to thrive in a fast paced environment in a collaborative manner among several diverse groups both internally and externally. Strong verbal and written communication skills, relationship building skills, as well as strong team building. Strong leadership and teamwork skills Ability to learn quickly and efficiently in order to get task done completely and correctly on time.
