Key achievements:

  • Conceptualized this study and the fundamentals of this concept has been resulted in two first author publication in Journal of Inflammation Research (PMID 36217453) and in Frontiers of Immunology (PMID 33679710).
  • The study proposal received a pilot grant funded by the ‘Institute for Human Infections and Immunity’ of UTMB under Phase II -IHII FY2021 Research Grant Program.

  • Conceptualized and investigated how infection with Trypanosoma cruzi protozoa leads to the cardiac fibrosis and cardiomyopathy symptoms that characterize the most critical stage of the Chagas disease.
  • Examined the role of extracellular vesicles and macrophages experimentally and was able to find novel biomarkers that aid in both diagnosis and treatment evaluation of Chagas disease.
  • Utilized immunofluorescence, nanoparticle assay, SiRNA transfection, chemiluminescence, immunohistochemistry, RT -qPCR, western blot, immunoprecipitation, and gelatin zymography based immunology and molecular biological tools to get the scientific outcome for this ‘U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ funded study.

Key achievements:

  • Two of the most notable findings from these works are that (1) chemical inhibition of the enzyme PARP-1 offers a potential therapeutic target for mitigating extra cellular vesicles driven inflammation in Chagas disease and (2) the biomarkers of vimentin, 8- OHdG, copeptin, and endostatin provide substantial value in measuring Chagas risk and reliably diagnosing the disease and its stage.
  • The findings of these studies resulted in three notable scientific article publications in Plos Pathogens (PMID 32315358), mBio (PMID 33172999) and Microbiology Spectrum (PMID 34479416) journal. The findings published in Plos Pathogens journal, was recognized by PLOS Pathogens as one of the five best articles published in the journal during 2020 with top citations.
