As a Travel Nurse with Medical Solutions, I utilized the foundation of my skills and experience to grow as an individual and expand my learning of nursing practices in other settings. I completed several thirteen week contracts at various facilities in Northern California. In each facility, flexibility was a requirement. The pace and nurse/patient ratio varied depending on the setting. Facilities included:
Stanford Hospital Endoscopy:Palo Alto, California-Pre-op/PACU; Completed a total of two-thirteen week contracts. Prepared patients preoperatively by obtaining medical history and initiating intravenous therapy. Initiated Care Plans and Discharge Planning. Monitored and recovered patients after receiving either general anesthesia or conscious sedation for endoscopic procedures, including those with biopsies.
Palo Alto Medical Foundation: Mountainview, California-PACU Phase 1 and Phase 2; Cared for adults and pediatric patients who had undergone surgical and endoscopic procedures. Administered medications and assessed for signs and symptoms of any unplanned event in an outpatient setting. In Phase 2, ensured that patients met criteria for discharge and information given accordingly to patient and immediate caretaker.
California Pacific Medical Center: San Francisco, California-Pre-op/Phase 2 Recovery of inpatients and outpatients undergoing surgery and endoscopic procedures. Audited charts preoperatively to ensure that appropriate forms, orders and results had been processed.
At all facilities, made follow-up postoperative calls.
Worked in various units of the facility for approximately eight years. After transferring to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, for almost ten years, continued to administer quality and individualized care to patients, adults and pediatrics, who had undergone surgery and procedures which required monitoring in either a phase one or two recovery from anesthesia. Assessed the need for appropriate lab tests, obtained orders and reported results accordingly.
Administered medications as ordered and monitored effectiveness with the use of appropriate assessment scales per facility and/or guidelines provided by the physician.
Assisted as a preceptor the training of new employees and nursing students in clinical rotations through the unit.
Served as a resource to peers during the transition to computer charting and continued to assist with training for new nurses to become familiar with Cerner, the system used by the facility.
Assisted physicians with preoperative procedures, such as insertion of invasive lines and nerve blocks.
Fulfilled the number of required call shifts and, together with a second Registered Nurse, prepared patients for procedures, monitored and recovered them to a level in which criteria was met to discharge home with appropriate instructions or transferred to an Acute or Intensive Care Inpatient Unit.
