I worked in a 60 bed NICU providing direct care to very critically ill patients. Job duties include; recording patients' medical history, vital statistics and test results in medical records. Monitoring post-op vitals, sterile set up and priming of IV fluids, and careful management of medications that are to be calculated precisely in the pediatric population to avoid error. Carry out orders received by the physician and nurse practitioner correctly and in a timely manner. Actively involved in various committees that provide additional education that the nurses can then take back to the unit and share with peers. Performs all tasks with a patient-centered focus while seeking opportunities for improvement of processes and treatments. Implements new assignments based on evaluation of staffing requirements. Review patient history, checking for any known allergies and current medication regimen.
Provide oral medication for sedation, and provide continuous monitoring of patient closely before, during and after surgery.
Provide discharge education to patient and family, for example; medications that are to be taken and how often, when they should call a Dr, what to expect from the surgery, and follow up appointments.
