I started my career in Oil Refineries as a scaffold builder working a Cat Cracker Outage at Cenex Refinery (CHS) in Laurel, Mt in 2000 working for Weld Tech Safety. I went on to work another Cat Cracker Outage at Exxon Refinery Billings,Mt in 2001 for Brand Scaffolding. Following the end of the Exxon Outage I was offered a job here at the Shell Martinez Refinery with Brand Scaffold. I continued to work for Brand at the Refinery up untill August of 2007 when I accepted a Job in operations with Shell, at the time I left Brand I held the position of Foreman overseeing the logistics and heavy oil production units in the refinery.

While working for Shell I was placed in our Clean Fuels Area which consists of Delayed Coking, HydroTreaters , Caustic Regeneration, and Isomerization Units. I worked these units until being promoted to shift team leader in 2014. I worked the STL job for 4 years5 years before being promoted to Refinery Team Leader, the job I currently hold today.

Became a Temporary Refinery Team Leader in 2018 and was promoted to Permanent Refinery Team Leader on 10/15/2020. Currently the RTL for Shift Team #1. Core Work Processes: Drives adherence to the ESP, MTA, OTM Work Processes, primarily through the STL, to ensure refinery operation is within identified limits and optimized at targets in order to meet the business plan on a shift basis. Advocates and exemplifies Stabilize, Slowdown, Shutdown when operation is outside of established ESP limits. Audits console alarm rates to understand potential refinery threats with console operators, and works with shift teams to develop mitigations when necessary. Conducts audits to ensure Console Operators are Performing Proactive Monitoring rounds. Results communicated to STLs. Leads the Shift Teams and STLs in following the ESP, MTA, OTM Work Processes, and sets the example and expectation “ properly completes the Refinery End of Shift Report, participates in Shift Turnover, Start of Shift Orientation, etc. Audits and coaches STLs on the quality of end of shift reports, disabled/inhibited alarm summaries and other aspects of ESP(audits shift reports and communicated back to STLs) Facilitates state of the refinery Start of Shift Orientation across all STLs to ensure the refinery is operating at plan, as well as identify any threats to operating at plan and within limits. Where needed, drives gap closure plan. This STL documents state of refinery against HSSE and business plan targets in the end of shift report, and communicates refinery wide. Site Integration: Single point contact for any changes to the Manufacturing Instructions or unit orders to ensure integration across the refinery. All communications regarding deviations flow through this position to the STLs, console operators and the Economics & Scheduling Dept. Assures that refinery changes affecting downstream units, upstream units, or any external parties (suppliers or customers) are communicated and coordinated to prevent environmental impacts, product quality impacts, and potential safety concerns. A specific example of this includes sequencing activities during unit startups and shutdowns. Evaluates abnormal refinery conditions on off hours to make decisions and take actions to secure additional resources when needed (maintenance support, technical support, etc.) and coordinates unit STLs to slowdown, stabilize or shutdown as necessary. Maintains awareness of immediate and short-term (24/7) refinery threats, as well as ensures mitigations plans are in place. Responsible for quality management of off-test operations, including callouts for lab support, sending special samples off-site, ensuring tankage decisions are clear and communicated, and that troubleshooting of unit operations to correct the situation occurs. I became a Temporary Shift Team Leader in 2013 and was promoted to Permanent Shift Team Leader in 2014. Responsibilities: The Shift Team Leader is accountable for day to day supervisory tasks and the longer term development operators so that Operational shift objectives and priorities are consistently understood and met. A primary component of this role is field leadership, mentoring and development of operators. Started my Shell / PBF Career as an Operator in Delayed Coking. I was qualified on the DCU Board, HydroTreater Board, DCU Outside A and B Jobs, Treater Outside Job and Isom Out Job. Worked multiple TA's during my time as an Operator and served as Lead Coordinator for the 2017 DHT Block T/A and 2017 DCU Block T/A, both T/A'S came in on time ,underbudget and injury free. Participated in Leader of Teams training and went thru multiple Goal Zero Safety classes and helped out as a presenter for T/A onboarding with outside contractors.
