Tech-savvy Project Manager well-versed in project management from inception to completion. Excels in value engineering and design management, as well as process re-engineering and improvement. Over twenty seven years of diverse service experience in construction, manufacturing, oil & gas and industrial companies settings has provided the broad range of work experience and skills which provides a degree of flexibility in functional roles within the organization. Highly developed analytical, technical and problem solving skills, highly motivated with the ability to work independently or within a team setting. A self-motivated trilingual professional with demonstrated ability of identifying opportunities and solutions and a keen ability to multi-task a variety of challenges and responsibilities. Also a forward-thinking Engineer with hand-on experience performing quality troubleshooting, system design and conceptual development.
With the cumulative years of experience working for a sub-contractor, contractor, owner and consultant has provided a unique insight to the understanding of the varying perspectives, concerns and the needs of the various stakeholders on a particular project. This has enhanced my ability to relate to parties of varying levels on the project.
While my primary official designation within the organization is the IBMS Manager in the Technical Support Group Department supporting all Lend Lease projects in Malaysia (and at times abroad), the broad range of valuable past work experience and skills presents a unique opportunity to be flexible enough to perform in a multi-role job function during my 16 years of employment at Lend Lease.
This versatility in job function include Project Manager, Design Manager, IBMS Manager, Retail Project Manager, MEP Manager and Bid Leader, Supply Chain Solutions System Administrator and Corporate Relocation Manager in response to the project and task at hand. Quite often these multi-role function are multi-tasked and thus demands a much greater level of efficiency.
After almost 5 years in Honeywell and with sufficient competence in system design, I gained employment as a Security Engineer / Consultant in Dectra Engineering Sdn Bhd whom at the time was awarded the Security and Building Controls Consulting Services for the KLCC North-West Development Project comprising of the Twin Towers, Suria KLCC, Car Park and DCC1. My assignment was to undertake the redesign of the security system for the Podium, Concert Hall, Ground plane, Tower 1-Tender Evaluation Levels, Tower 1-Executive Floors, Tower 1-Sky lobby, Tower 2-Malaysian Petroleum Club, T1/T2 PSSR and T1-PLSR as well as to review the entire security system design for the KLCC NWD as a result of the termination of the previous Security Consultant.
Project / Senior Project Engineer
Now equipped with the knowledge and experience in process controls, instrumentation, computers, distributed control system and fire systems, gained through my employment in Esso, it was time to apply the knowledge in the commercial construction sector, specifically in the Intelligent Building sector and hence signing up with Honeywell Engineering Sdn Bhd, Home and Buildings Division responsible for the delivery of building controls and monitoring systems, intelligent fire alarm and building security systems. In the capacity is a Project Engineer, I was exposed to application engineering and due to my experience in systems troubleshooting placed in the commissioning team and rapidly promoted to Senior Project Engineer within a year of employment.
Being comfortable and at ease with Consultants and Clients, and armed with the product knowledge, I assumed a consultative selling role supporting the sales team. This provided me with the opportunity to gain experience in system design, tender documentation production and proposal writing (a key asset in the Consulting line in the subsequent years to come).
Deputy Project Manger
With the launch of the KLIA project in circa 1995, I was recruited into the bidding team to write proposals to bid the Total Airport Management System (TAMS-BMS) package which Honeywell subsequently won. Leveraging upon the initial win for the TAMS package, Honeywell subsequently won the Main Terminal Building & Contact Pier BCMS Package, the VVIP Building BCMS Package, the Flight Crew Briefing Center BCMS Package and Apron Ground Lighting BCMS Package
Due to the size of the work Honeywell secured, I was then appointed as the Deputy Project Manager reporting to an expat Project Director to manage all these packages. It was and still is one of the largest BCMS project Honeywell has ever undertaken and has given me the opportunity for personal growth.
With career opportunities opening up in the Oil and Gas Sector during the end of the 80's during a sharp dip in commercial construction demand, I made a bold decision on a career change for a fresh start in the Oil and Gas industry signing up as an Instrumentation and Electrical Specialist in Esso Production (M) Inc. Esso provided a two prong training approach which is a 3 month class room session on shore followed by a 3 year on the job training based off shore which provided an excellent plan for career advancement in terms of skills and knowledge acquisition, though that would mean working in a hands on capacity as opposed to a supervisory role. I was fortunate to be posted to the Guntong A platform being one of the most modern offshore platform at the time that gave me a wonderful opportunity to gain a wealth of experience which proved to be a valuable asset in later years to come. These include process controls, instrumentation, electrical systems, UPS, Programmable Logic Controllers, oil and gas fire suppression systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, gas turbine, power generation, emergency shutdown systems, comms, air-conditioning, refrigeration, mechanical handling, water purification, microwave transmission, fiber optics and above all Environmental Health & Safety (which is one of the key values with Lend Lease in the later years of my career).
Project Coordinator (Elevators & Escalators)
Leveraging upon the knowledge and experience gleaned as a Site supervisor in Poly Electrical, the decision to move to General Electric was very much a strategic decision, which is to gain exposure in the Mechanical field specifically to broaden my engineering knowledge. The role as a Project Coordinator provided a suitable platform to apply the fundamentals of project management learned in Poly Electrical in a mechanical services installation environment while at the same time learning the mechanical trade. In this capacity, I expanded my experience in formal letter writing, contracts, procurement, mechanical installation, metal fabrication and elevator systems commissioning and troubleshooting.
Service Coordinator (Elevators & Escalators)
After delivering over 22 installation projects over a three year span, I decided move to the Service department to take up a role as a Service Coordinator dedicated to elevator retrofit projects. This provided the experience in metal fabrication, maintenance, control systems commissioning and troubleshooting apart from applying the project management experience built up in the Project department.
Production Coordinator (Elevators & Escalators)
With the experience gained with designing elevator components for retrofit projects, GEC set their sights on manufacturing elevators with a higher degree of local content for both the local and export market. This meant manufacturing the entire elevator cab, sling, counterweight slings, doors, architraves and door sills locally while the rest were imports. In the capacity as the production coordinator heading the manufacturing department, it had provided firsthand experience in sheet metal fabrication, CNC manufacturing, design and R&D on elevator components (e.g.dot matrix LED displays, voice synthesizers, suspension guide rollers, PC based supervisory workstations) though cutting edge back in the 80's have now become a mainstream standard feature today.
This was my first job right after College and it gave me the much needed foundation with regards to the physical aspects of the construction process, scheduling, communication, commissioning, the expectation on quality. It was in a way learning the fundamentals of project management albeit through a hands on approach. During my 12 month employment, I had firsthand experience of commercial high rise, residential and industrial projects low and high voltage system installations.
