I have been employed at Petsmart for almost 3 years. I started off part-time as a Pet Care Associate in North Carolina. I worked with fish, reptiles, birds, hamsters, guinea pigs and rats. I would feed them, clean cages/tanks, treat them when they were sick, and customer service was always number one to make sure the Pet Parents knew the information to properly take care of their pet. Also I checked aquariam temperatures, tested water and changed filters. I faced the store as well making sure it looked presentable for the customers. I also helped with cashiering whenever my manager needed it. Then after a year of working in North Carolina, I transferred to the Petsmart in Georgia. There my manager wanted to cross train me in every aspect in the store. I did cashiering, stocking, Pet Care, and Dog bathing. The only thing I didn't do was dog training. After a couple months working at this Petsmart, my manager pulled me aside and asked if I would like to become full-time and go to grooming school to be a groomer where I would go from being paid hourly to getting 50% commission and working only in the salon. I agreed and went to grooming academy at an academy certified Petsmart for a month. This is a place where I learned the basics of grooming. When I returned back to my home store, I was required to groom 100 specific dogs with my Salon Manager in order for me to groom on my own. From then on I groomed and learned so much about the dogs. I groomed for the next few months until I needed to move back to Texas for my mom. Then I transferred to the Petsmart in Texas as their Salon Manager. I was the youngest in the district. I then went to Manager training in El Paso and returned to manage until May 5, 2013. I made 60% commission plus bonuses, groomed 7-9 dogs per day (8 hour shift), did paperwork to make sure everything was being paid out right and was accounted for. I "turned the salon around" as my manager put it, There was a lot of drama when I came there. I was able to control the situation and did one on one interviews with each groomer or bather to find the improvements and concerns they had. So the time I worked there, I made sure all the issues were solved and it was a great enviroment to work in. I recently got married to an Airman so I had to quit to move to Japan because there are no Petsmarts.
I was the youngest manager in my district at Petsmart. Most associates take about 3-5 years to get a manager position and it took me 2 years. I am also proud that I was cross-trained in everything in the store and I feel that it was even better for me to help the Pet Parents more than the average associate.
