As a graduate scholar in organizational psychology, there is an emphasis in Human Resource Management and all parallel skills. Often referred to as I-O psychology, this field focuses on increasing workplace productivity and related issues such as the physical and mental well-being of employees in addition to maintaining a socially responsible corporate climate. The overall goal of this field is to study and understand behavior in the workplace. One can think of I-O psychology as having two major components. First, there is the industrial side, which involves looking at how best to match individuals to specific job roles (personnel psychology/HR management). The organizational side of this field is more focused on understanding how organizations affect individual behavior. Organizational structures, social norms, management styles, legality, and role expectations are all factors that can influence how people behave within an organization. By understanding such factors, I-O psychologists hope to improve individual performance and healthy while at the same time benefiting the organization as a whole; it is an applied field. Some issues addressed include training and development, employee selection, ergonomics, performance management, work life, organizational development, retention, and implementing company policies.
