OWNER
Summary
HP RIS Super Micro CAD / CAM System Administration (UNIX) Process control related transducers Temperature, pressure, flow, level, weight, distance, and so forth as used in electric, hydraulic and pneumatic control systems. Why should I add the MSCS Program to my active MSAE Programs of study? As my background indicates, I have always been interested and deeply involved in science, technology and engineering from a manufacturing, engineering, and teaching prospective. To be successful in these areas, a meaningful, hands-on understanding of applied engineering, information technology and computer science is essential. I am always attempting to 'connect the dots' between these different technologies and related engineering genres, therefore my graduate study in applied engineering, information technology and computer science will move me in that direction, as well as enhancing my ability to teach at an institution of higher education. Combining my 'real world' manufacturing experiences with my educational background, potentially I have a lot to offer to students of these areas of study.
Experience
Owner
January 1995 to Current
Grievous Angel Productions
  • Operated the different production aspects - Recording studio design, installation and operation; FOH live sound engineer (Live music concerts); Pro audio / video design and installation; Web design and maintenance; Musician playing guitar and pedal steel in working bands.
Sr. Electrical Engineer
January 1975 to January 1995
ITT Grinnell
  • Chartered to develop plant wide automation including data communications back to IT and Production Management utilizing PLCs, UNIX Supervisory Platform (HP RIS Super Micros) and IT Department (IBM System 36/38 Data Processing}.
  • This required PLC process and machine control logic, relay logic as well as PID control loops interfacing to various transducers, color graphic interface design for production input, as well as extensive networking (LAN / WAN) from floor PLC's to front office Micro and Mainframe platforms.
  • I was also responsible for all vision systems, engineering desktop computers (UNIX and Windows 3.1/Windows 95 platforms) and industrial electronic projects.
Adjunct Professor
  • at GSC/GSU teaching full credit classes in electrical and electronic subjects.
  • Various years while working at ITT (6th period classes).
  • Emerson Electric/Brooks Instrument: Designer, 1973.
  • Job description: Product drafting and design.
  • Initial engineer training: Meter proving, machining center set-up and operation, general plant operations.
  • Note: Worked on and completed my master's thesis while employed at Brooks Instrument.
  • Resigned to go back to GSU to earn my BS in Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • Further Professional Training.
  • ITT Grinnell Professional outside classes: UNIX classes in Operating System (OS) instruction set and operation practices, drivers, typical data backup procedures, and support platforms.
  • C programming language instruction set, driver programming, and UNIX instruction programming.
  • Industrial control systems PLC relay logic and process control systems ranging from 'off-on' step control to PID loop controllers with feedback loops.
  • Machining centers CNC control systems, interfacing to PLC and quality control systems.
  • Vision technologies - Used in factory automation, quality control, product identification, and safety.
  • Personal computers (PC) Windows 3.1 and up, MS Office, relational database applications.
  • Color graphic design - Operator input / output interface to PLC's and industrial computers as needed for plant floor operations.

Personal Information
Why MSCS Program chose Billy for the Fall 2015 cohort? Based on my resume of manufacturing and electrical engineering experience, along with my academic achievements, I should and will be an excellent addition to the MSCS program at GSU. The Fall 2015 cohort perfect timing, fitting current situation very well. The MSCS Online 'distance learning' classroom gives me the flexibility I need along with the classic f2f campus lectures that the MSAE program offers. I am looking forward to starting class with the MSCS Fall 2015 cohort. Sincerely, William Thomas Johnson, Jr. (Billy) GSU ID: 900429387
