I've dedicated over 15 years of my life working in special education as a teaching assistant/paraeducator. I'm highly energetic, multi task with ease, and am able and willing to assist the teacher and students in any way necessary. I'm extremely flexible, and enjoy working in any type of classroom setting, and acclimate easy to various types of teaching styles. I am knowledgeable and able to implement all of the most current teaching techniques( ABA, crisis management/CPI certified, TEACH, PECS, Discreet Trial, etc.) I'm comfortable, qualified, and experienced working children, with varying emotional and intellectual capacities...anywhere from children with disabilities that cause them to be medically fragile, to children with behavioral issues that create barriers in their social and intellectual growth. I'm compassionate, patient, and 100% devoted to helping each child break down the barriers that hinder them from living their life to its full potential. I believe in integration, not segregation. I strive to help each child feel accepted and valued, and to feel confident and successful that they CAN DO IT!
I worked with adults with special needs, which included intellectual difficulties of varying degrees, coupled with moderate to severe behavioral issues. I helped them gain confidence by teaching them skills to help them work towards independence. I assisted them with daily living skills, hygiene, cooking, cleaning, job skills, etc., I worked consistently with teaching them skills to help develop positive behaviors and eventually extinguish those that create barriers to their social and intellectual growth.
As a substitute I got to work in a large variety of classrooms with many different children. I became like a chameleon and was able to work well in any setting. I worked with kids who were very fragile, as well as those with extreme behaviors. The age groups ranged anywhere from infant/toddler-teens-young adults. The classrooms were just as varied..from pre-school, to elementary, to high school & college campuses. I tried to be an asset in each classroom by going with the flow of the classroom & assisting with all of the tasks set forth by that classroom. Depending on the classroom, the tasks consisted of some (or) all of the following: individual goal work, toileting, behavioral intervention, feeding, diapering, physical therapy, sports activities, and integrating with peers and the community.
I worked for ten years as an aide for teenagers with special needs. The classroom consisted of 10 students with intellectual disabilities coupled with extreme behavioral issues. Our primary goal was to help students learn the skills necessary to help them control undesirable behaviors, and develop positive social skills. We worked consistently on community integration, helping students develop skills to carry out tasks at various job sites. We participated in many community leisure activities as well, to reinforce students who had worked hard towards their goals. While on site we worked on various academics. Most students were at an academic level anywhere from about pre-school to elementary school(depending on the student). Working with such a diverse group, I became very skilled at giving attention to detail and making myself aware of each students individual needs, goals, and behavior plan..as well as which techniques were to be used to implement them.
