Examine Barn Owl boxes for nesting activity, identify avian species when nesting material present, and provide maintenance to boxes as needed. Assist in the capture and release of owls for banding. Implemented the acquisition and aided in the erection of Barn Owl nest boxes mounted on power poles.
Monitor Screech Owl nesting box via nesting box camera. Document nesting activity, identify prey species, assist in the capture and release of owls for banding.
Assist with monitoring and recording of activity in Prothonotary Warbler, Wood Duck, and Kestrel nest boxes. Log adult behavior, identify species of egg or chick if present, remove invasive species if present, report nest disturbances or predatory instances, and maintain the access to the boxes.
Monitor weekly 15 Eastern Bluebird nest boxes. Log nest status, number of eggs present, number of chicks present, number of young that have fledged, and the removal of old nests. Switch invasive species eggs with wooden eggs and shipped eggs to the study called Nest Watch Program.
Assist Naturalists with raptor care, cage building and cleaning, trail clearing, and storage organization.
Conduct raptor rescues when needed by catching, securing, and then transporting to Owl Moon Raptor Center.
Maryland Master Naturalist volunteer training program receive 52 hours of instruction, including hands-on activities and demonstrations, indoors and out.
