Infrastructure:

  • Transitioned the development environment to an environment that closely mimicked that of customers. This is an extremely complex operation as that changed the way the environment was structured and tests were running for the last 30 years. It was done seamlessly with little impact on the development and testing communities or the release schedules

Critical Patch Sets:

  • Spearheaded the initiative of triaging Database Critical Patch Updates. Formed a team to streamline the process and triage the problems timely as the releases are time bound. Automated the whole triage process that cut down the effort from 1000 person hours per release to 16 hours per release
Professional Experience
Director, 06/1997 - Current
Department Of Agriculture Alexandria, LA,

Worked in various roles, starting as a Member of Technical Staff in 1997 and moving up to a Director in 2010. Built a global team of 25 people with responsibilities including, but not limited to, Database Compatibility, Upgrade, Interoperability, DB release on Windows, Quarterly Patch Set Updates, Database Patch set triage, Database Test common infrastructure, Concurrent execution of regression tests in a single database, and Certification of database in Oracle's cloud offering.

  • Built a global team of 25 people from ground up
  • Personally involved at every stage of recruitment process
  • Mentored the team members to ensure a very successful and productive team
  • Despite intense competition, retention rates are very high
  • Team members are very satisfied and extremely motivated
  • Responsibilities increased from Database (DB) Compatibility and Interoperability to DB Quarterly Critical Patch Updates, Exadata Bundle Patches, DB Bundle Patches, DB release on Windows, DB Patch set triage, DB Test common infrastructure, DB Rolling Upgrade, Shiphome Testing, and DB as a Service (Oracle Cloud) Certification
  • Led the initiative of transitioning the database test bed to cloud environment. This involved developing a highly flexible and easy to use framework to concurrently run hundreds of test suites in a single database. Required coordinating with hundreds of developers across the organization, integration team, server farm team, and the management teams to adapt the new framework. This resulted in cutting down the hardware requirements to execute the tests by 75% while also improving the total turnaround time by 25%
  • Led the initiative to transition the development environment to an environment that closely mimicked that of customers. This is an extremely complex operation as that changed the way the environment was structured and tests were running for the last 30 years. It had to be done seamlessly so as not to disturb the release schedules and making it easy to understand for the hundreds of database development and testing communities. More than a million tests were run and several thousands were modified to adapt to the new environment
  • Spearheaded the initiative of triaging Database Critical Patch Updates. Formed a team to streamline the process and triage the problems timely as the releases are time bound. Automated the whole triage process that cut down the whole effort from 1000 person hours per release to 16 hours per release. Extended this model to other similar efforts and now own the triage for Database Bundle Patches, Exadata Bundle Patches, and other critical patches in addition to Critical Patch Updates
  • Led the efforts to certify the critical patch updates for Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) Rolling Upgrade. Developed a framework to automate and automated testing to bring up multiple instances of a single Oracle database with different versions of binaries and upgrade the database at the end. This is a critical requirement for customers consuming regular security updates
  • Developed a framework for Oracle Data Guard Rolling Upgrade that uses the Oracle Standby technology to upgrade from one release to another without significant downtime. This is another requirement for the quarterly patch updates
  • Led the initiative to automate certification of database components on an install environment. All the database tests are run in the development environment which is very different from the environment shipped to customers. This certification used to be a time consuming and resource intensive task, usually taking two weeks for about 100 developers to complete the task for every release milestone. Now the certification is done as part of the daily regression testing
  • Developed a framework that automated cross platform distributed testing. This is one of the frameworks that is extensively used by Database Appliances to ensure cross version and cross platform compatibility. Formed a team, trained and handed over the framework to maintain this
  • Led the initiative to develop framework for running tests for Golden Gate, a company with database replication technology that Oracle acquired
  • Guided the team in developing a framework for running OracleR, an analytical tool, on Windows
  • Guided the team in developing a framework for automating Exadoop, Oracle's Hadoop based solution using Exadata, tests
  • Developed a framework to automate Database Upgrade/Downgrade testing
  • Developed a framework to automate Database Interoperability testing between different versions of clients and servers and across platforms. Due to the number of releases supported for interoperability, the certification matrix is very big and complex. Despite the complexity, managed this area with just one resource and kept it bug free for the past several years
  • Developed a framework to automate Database Client Upgrade testing, known as Drop-In Compatibility or Oracle Software Development Kit
