I believe that communication is a skill we use every day significantly impacting all aspects of our lives. Effective communication has the ability to empower us. On the opposite end of the spectrum ineffective communication can cripple us. To be an effective communicator, students also need to understand the importance of critical thinking to evaluate their own experiences, the experiences of others, language, persuasion, identity, diversity, beliefs, attitudes, and values. Critical thinking of the above components shapes how we communicate, and the lenses we view the world from.
Teaching communication courses enables me to empower students to learn and enhance their skills. Having the skills to communicate effectively, and the ability to understand how and what is communicated to us enables students to have more influence over their own lives, and those around them.
Education is one of the few things that will always take a person farther than where they were before. As an educator, I have the privilege to enable myself and my students to be continuous learners, and evaluators of the messages we send and receive. This ultimately influences our awareness of ourselves and others. This awareness irrevocably creates and sustains our ability as workers, family members, friends, and community members to express, influence, understand, and grow in an evolving world.
