Project Manager11/2006 to 08/2012 MeetingMatrix International, Inc – Portsmouth, New Hampshire
I spearheaded deployment of iPlan for Intercontinental Hotels, resulting in obtaining 130 Intercontinental Hotels which added $1,000,000 in revenue, that's not including renewal fees.
I was involved from the start of this project, I wore many hats since we were a smaller company. My main responsibilities were Scrum Product Owner and backup Scrum Master. The first thing we did as a Team was to define the Product Vision. The team were true believers of Agile and Srum! We were a self organized team, we were very good at holding each other accountable. We also delivered on what we committed to (99% of the time), you always have those unforeseen issues. We were also very transparent, we made sure everyone knew if we had impediments and we also demonstrated our progress at the end of the sprints.
As the Scrum Product Owner I made sure I had all of the requirements and I did this by getting user stories. I would get user stories several different ways. I would collaborate with the Team and then also anyone in the company that had a stake in the project. We would let them write the user stories using the following template. “As a (user role), I want (function) so that (benefit)”. It was then my job to put them into the Backlog and to prioritize them based on business value or customer demand. I also would get user stories from the users of our core software "MeetingMatrix" All stories had to follow this model INVEST Independent, Negotiable, Valuable, Estimatable, Small and last but not least Testable. Stories are also a way to get collaboration from different Teams, so you can get a lot of different viewpoints. I would then decompose or break the larger stories down into smaller, testable and valuable functionality that could be added to different increments.
Another role as Scrum Product Owner is grooming the Product Backlog, part of the grooming process is sizing the stories, that's the one way you will know how many stories can be done in a sprint based on the Team's velocity, if you know the Team's velocity? I actually did Planning Poker with the Team and it worked very well. I am also a stickler for time boxing my meetings.
One thing we know as Scrum Product Owners is that requirements will change and so do priorities. I worked very closely with the stakeholders on prioritizing the backlog, I was very transparent with them and the Team. That's the one thing I love about Agile and Scrum.
I also assisted and planned all of the meetings that go along with Scrum. Release Planning, Sprint Planning, Sprint Review & Retrospective and then also our Daily Scrums. I would always try to stay at least two sprints ahead, that way I could adjust priorities if needed and also ensure we are following our road map and hitting our milestones.
I also continued Sprints for our core software MeetingMatrix adding additional functionality incrementally, this was done through sprint and iteration planning, daily scrums, and finally a sprint review and retrospective.
I recommended process and systems improvements such as implementing a user forum so we could gather data on exactly what the customers needs were in our software.
Coached 18 team members, offering constructive feedback on their work performance as individuals and as a team.
Monitored timelines and flagged potential issues to be addressed.
