Some of the preliminary questions may focus around your training and history. An interviewer may ask where you learned your skills and how you’ve grown as a cook. To reinforce your knowledge and understanding, the interviewer may also ask some basic technical questions, such as how you’d handle a particular cut of meat or what substitutes you might consider if a patron has certain allergies.
In addition to verifying your skills, the interviewer will consider how well you fit in with a team. Depending on the position you’re applying for, you could receive questions about how you work on a line, what makes for smooth shift changes, and how to handle a busy kitchen. You can also expect questions about interacting with managers, co-workers, and disgruntled customers.
Going into your interview prepared will ensure the highest likelihood of success. Remember to prepare for both technical, skill-based questions about cooking and inquiries about how you work with others and organize your time.
