If you have a great deal of experience as a tutor, this can best be displayed in a chronological resume. A functional resume, however, may be better if you’re just starting out in your career and don’t have much experience.

Tutor resume samples will have a variety of summary statements but most will contain some
mix of years of experience, personal qualities, areas of specialization and key accomplishments.
How to Write the Tutor Resume Education Section
Mention any honors you received and any extracurricular activities that might be relevant. If you have any professional certifications that can bolster your qualifications as a tutor, list these as well. For example, if you’re a business or computer tutor, you should mention any computer programming certifications you’ve acquired. Other certifications that aren’t relevant to your tutoring subjects can be listed in a separate section. How to Write the Tutor Work Experience Section
If you’re writing a chronological resume, you should list your work experience in reverse chronological order, with the most recent positions listed first. Include your job title, your dates or employment,the name of the company, the location of the company and then 3 to 6 bullet points that describe both what you did and how you added value
to the company.
Even jobs other than tutoring can be used to highlight your strengths in working with people and your ability to achieve goals. For example, your experience may include training new employees on various procedures, which has similarities to tutoring. You may have done tutoring part time as a student; this too can be listed under work experience. If you observe tutor resume samples, you’ll see that people use a variety of formats. If you have no or very little work experience, you can create a functional resume that focuses on your skills and academic background.
To do this, create a separate accomplishments section where you list the duties and achievements that would qualify you to be a tutor. You do not need to associate these with particular jobs. Your work experience section then becomes a simple list of your titles, company, dates of employment and company location.

Tutor Resume Fails: Mistakes to Avoid
- Factual, Grammatical or Spelling Mistakes -Make sure you proofread your resume before sending it out or uploading it anywhere. Double check that all information is accurate and up to date and that there are no typos or errors.
- Focus on Duties Rather than Accomplishments -It’s important to let people know what you’ve accomplished; don’t simply list your responsibilities at past jobs. For example, rather than saying I tutored students in math and social studies, say I helped students improve their grades and achieve SAT scores that helped them get into good colleges.
- Resume is Hard to Read -A resume should only be as long as it needs to be, preferably no more than two pages. Text should be in one, easy-to-read font. Using a font that’s too small or eccentric is a way to put employers off before they even read your resume.
- Lack of Specifics -If you are too general when describing your skills and experience, it doesn’t convey your actual abilities. The more specifics you can include, the better. Tutored students in English is not nearly as descriptive as Tutored students in subjects such as 19th Century Literature, English Composition and Romantic Poetry.
Job Prospects for Tutors
Teacher assistants, for example, is a profession that’s expected to grow 9 percent from 2012-2022, which is just below average. Demand for tutors also varies widely depending on your specialty. As a tutor, it’s a good idea to keep track of data in areas such as job growth and popular college majors, as these provide clues on which subjects people might seek help in. For example, business degrees are currently the most popular in the United States, so the demand for tutoring in business-related topics is likely to be high for the foreseeable future. If you find that there isn’t a strong demand in tutoring certain subjects, you may want to consider broadening your horizons and getting qualified in more popular fields.
