Travel Medicine Advisor, 09/1998 to Current
St. Joseph HealthPetaluma, CA,

As a Travel Medicine Advisor:

  • I work closely with our contracted organization to help them assess their clientele's overall health and wellness as they prepare to travel and work overseas - many of them in places with little to no healthcare readily available. I help determine that they are physically and mentally able to travel and work for an extended period of time.
  • I review the clients online Health Questionnaire and create a personalized Physical Exam form based on their medical history and their organizations required guidelines for lab and screening tests.
  • I also create an immunization plan for them based on their age and also planned country of service.
  • Once the client has had their physical exam completed, they return that information to us. I then review the exam, labs, screening tests and immunization record and make note of any concerns. This information is sent back to the organizations Medical Consultants for review so that they can either medically clear or not clear that person for service.
  • Many times additional information is requested by the Medical Consultants during the approval process. I serve as the liaison between the clients and the Medical Consultants, getting requests and information to and from each, to help aide in determining if the client is healthy and fit for service.
  • I also personally answer many questions from clients, via both email and phone calls.
  • All of my exam and immunization recommendations, and correspondence with Medical Consultants and client's is well documented in a custom computer program.
Onsite Nurse Reviewer, 07/1991 to 08/1998
Blue Cross Blue Shield Of North DakotaCity, STATE,

As the Onsite Nurse Reviewer I reviewed charts of hospitalized patients at Saint Alexius Medical Center who had BCBSND Insurance.

My work included the following:

  • Reading through patient health data, including histories, physician diagnoses and treatments to make sure they met criteria for continued inpatient hospitalization.
  • Clarifying if there was any secondary insurances, Worker's Compensation or No Fault that were also covering costs.
  • Reviewing physician coding to verify proper charges were being made.
  • Working closely with Hospital Quality Assurance Reviewers and BCBS Case Benefits Management to ensure patient received all available resources covered by their plans. We would work together to create specialized plans of treatment for those needing longer hospitalizations or specific cares that were no longer covered under their initial DRG.
  • Demonstrating self-reliance and time management by meeting workflow needs. I was the only staff member from BCBS at St Alexius, so was responsible to keep my chart reviews up to date and be knowledgeable of those patients who had BCBS insurance.
Staff Registered Nurse, 05/1987 to 03/2006
Medcenter One And Baptist HomeCity, STATE,

I worked at Medcenter One (now Sanford Health) in the Telemetry unit immediately after my college graduation.

In the fall of 1988 I went back to school to work on my BS in Nursing degree. I worked only weekends in the Float Pool during that time, and I was sent to the Pediatric unit quite often as they were short staffed. I really enjoyed working with the children , and also the entire staff in that unit! When a full time position opened up in Pediatrics, I decided to take that and not continue on another year in school. I returned to work full time at the hospital until the Summer of 1991 when I went to work for BCBSND.

I also worked at the Bismarck Baptist Nursing Home from 2006 - 2008. I worked every other weekend as a Charge Nurse. This was a part time job in addition to my job at Travel Health America. My duties were very similar to those at the hospital.

As a staff nurse I did the following:

  • Prioritized patient care assignments based on patient conditions to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Evaluated patients to develop and update treatment plans while anticipating day-to-day needs.
  • Administered medications (oral, IV and injectable), documented dosages and patient conditions/outcomes.
  • Reviewed physician orders and administered therapies, treatments and medications.
  • Recorded patients' medical history, vital statistics and test results in their medical records.
  • Developed care plans complete with effective nursing measures to improve patients' mental and physical health.
  • Explained treatment procedures, medication risks, special diets and physician instructions to patients.
  • Maintained reports to provide oncoming shift with full patient status.
  • Instructed patients, families and caregivers on diagnoses, chronic disease management and medication self-management.
  • Answered patient questions and provided take-home materials for further information.
  • Mentored new nurses on practices and procedures to drive patient outcome goals.
