I have been with the Postal Service for 29 years. I was a Union steward and/or officer for 21 of those years. In the last 5 years I became aware that the Union was heading in a direction I could not follow. It became every man for himself and not what was good for the local. I began seeing management's side more and more. Realizing that employees were required to come to work and work; that overtime should be used as needed and not allotted to senior employees.
I have a vast knowledge of three of the largest unions in the country. I have no doubt I could learn and decipher the contracts utilized at CNS Pantex. I feel like my 21 years of practical experience in the field of grievance processing more than makes up for college education. In 21 years I wrote over 3000 grievances at step 1, 2, 3, and up to arbitration. I testified in numerous arbitrations and EEO's.
proficient at Microsoft word/works proficient at excel type 45 wpm 10-key by touch can maintain filing systems very organized | proficient at preparing documents for labor relations presentations vast knowledge of APWU, NPMHU, and NALC contracts I am a very fast learner. One of my many strengths is that I can see two steps ahead of any situation. That accounts for expeditious completion of all tasks. As a natural leader, I have no problems taking control of a situation and delegating duties to co-workers to get the task at hand done. It is a challenge to me to accomplish things that seem impossible. As the only scheme clerk in my section, I single handedly get all scheme mail worked up and to the carriers. I previously worked as a union steward/officer. I held the offices of Vice President, Clerk Craft Director, and Assistant Clerk Craft Director. These offices helped me understand the hierarchy of the Postal Service. Working directly with supervisors, managers, and installation heads helped me realize the significance of meeting together as a team to realize the Postal Service's mission. Working as a 204-B has shown me the other side of the Postal Service. It's been eye opening. The constraints and time limits supervisors have is challenging; but has allowed me to use my time management skills. Thinking on my feet has also put me at an advantage for not only getting carriers in from the street; but scheduling clerks to get the most done with the least amount of employees. My union work has given me the skills to work within the contract to get things done. I have been on 5 negotiation teams during contract years for local negotiations. At these times I gained knowledge to put contract interpretation into play to bring about language that was beneficial to both sides of the table. By setting table rules, introducing contractual language change, and finalizing contractual language changes, allowed me to serve not only the members I represented but helped postal management have a more meaningful relationship with their employees. |
