Assisted in evaluating two educational interventions for Latino parents in primary care. Worked with the health providers in the Pediatric Department at SFGH to recruit patients. Explained study to interested patients and obtained informed consent. Interviewed 81 patients to complete 20-minute patient questionnaires and delivered 20-minute educational intervention to patients in Spanish.
Assisted in evaluating the reach and efficacy of the Healthy Lifestyles program in the treatment of overweight and obese Latino children. Worked with the health providers in the Pediatric Department at SFGH to recruit patients. Also obtained patient biometric data, performed 24 hour dietary recalls with patients, provided patients with accelerometers, and helped deliver the Healthy Lifestyles curriculum to patients.
Helped develop the infrastructure for a project focused on preventing high blood pressure in the Philippines. Aided in the design of the research protocol and created supporting documentation for review by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Stanford and the University of the Philippines. Coded the database for research data entry using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap). Taught 6 nurses and 20 community health workers how to administer and encode the World Health Organization (WHO) STEPS Questionnaire on REDCap. Led 130 trial runs of patient interviews in four villages in the Philippines. Trained a local nurse to serve as the new research coordinator to ensure project sustainability.
The OHSU Pay it Forward Mentorship Program connects underserved and underrepresented students with medical students. As a mentor, help answer questions and guide mentees in their application process to medical school.
Member of LMSA (Latino Medical Student Association). As Community Relations Manager, helped establish a partnership with Virginia Garcia Memorial Clinic. Created volunteer opportunities for medical students to provide basic health care at various migrant health camps in the Portland area.
As a member of the Dean's Rural Health Advisory Board, helped the Associate Dean of Rural Medicine create the Rural Health Discovery Program for MD students. Co-led the first week-long trip to Klamath Falls, OR in 2017.
As a board member of Klamath Open Door Family Practice, reviewed operational activities and helped identify strategies to deliver optimal health care to the community (e.g. hiring a new CEO and and opening a new clinic).
Established partnerships with community organizations and planned and implemented multiple outreach events to raise awareness about Cover Oregon, Oregon's new health exchange. Provided one-on-one Cover Oregon application assistance to nearly 300 individuals.
Developed and implemented a 3-week public health campaign to promote exercise and healthy eating as a means of preventing high blood pressure. Raised and managed several thousand dollars of the project's $13,000 budget. Campaign reached 2,000 fifth and sixth grade students as well as 100 families through in-class presentations and community health fairs in Cebu City, Philippines.
Recognizing the challenges many pre-meds face navigating the path to medicine without proper guidance or a solid support system, co-founded the Stanford American Medical Student Association (AMSA) Mentorship Program to bring mentorship to community college students. Worked closely with a team of medical students, physicians, and faculty to offer various opportunities such as shadowing and application workshops for program participants. Presented program at the AMSA National Convention.
