Work History
Research Assistant, 10/2021 to Current
Children's National Medical Center, , Melbourne

The work of the facility focuses on self-sustaining crop production in space and extraterrestrial surfaces through the use of in-situ resource utilization techniques developed in the lab. My participating research experience mainly focuses on the remediation of simulated Martian regolith and its potential use in plant growth. The regolith simulant has a similar composition to volcanic minerals and has been found to provide a hostile environment as a substrate for plant growth. With the regolith having a high abundance of metal oxides, the lab focuses on identifying bioremediating methods in introducing or synthesizing nutrient availability in regolith and conducts tolerance screening of multiple microbial and crop-producing organisms to Martian regolith. Other lab duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assisted in experiment preparations for multiple research groups.
  • Participated/Led research team in cyanobacterial growth in Mars simulated regolith study.
  • Worked both independently and collaboratively in fast-paced laboratory environment.
  • Performed statistical, qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Attended seminars and symposiums to improve overall knowledge and understanding.
  • Gathered, arranged and corrected research data to create representative graphs and charts highlighting results for presentations.
Research Intern, 01/2023 to 05/2023
Planet Fitness Inc., , Merritt Island, FL

Participated in Long-Term Evolution Experimentation (LTEE) that focuses on bacterial strains that are known contaminants of the International Space Station's Water Recovery System. Project aims to determine the mutation frequency and resulting phenotypes of evolutionary competition under microgravity simulation of the historical strains E.coli 606 and 607 as the model organism in the LTEE experiments. Experiences in project participation encompass the standard practices of transcriptomic and metagenomic experimentation as a supportive intern researcher. Other responsibilities include:

  • Completed research, compiled data, updated spreadsheets and produced timely reports.
  • Gathered, arranged and corrected research data to create representative graphs and charts highlighting results for presentations.
  • Literature reading for details about LTEE procedures regarding REL606/607 E.coli.
