As a member on a 17-person Type 1 Firefighting Hand Crew, my duties require me to maintain top physical condition and ensure a constant state of readiness to fight wildland fires in all geographical locations and fuel types in California. I am responsible for the proper use and maintenance of all issued safety gear and equipment assigned to me. I am proficient in the use and operation of my Fire Shelter and all Personal Protective Equipment. I am required to be proficient and knowledgeable with the 10 Standard Fire Fighting Orders, the 18 Watch Out Situations, downhill line construction checklist, common denominators, fire behavior, and fireline construction principles. As a Swamper to the Captain, I am required to read map books and use GPS units to plot routes to emergency incidents. I program and use hand held and mobile radios and ensure that the correct frequencies are available for communications. I take weather observations throughout the shift on the fire line utilizing a belt weather kit as well as a Kestrel device. I am proficient in the maintenance and operation of Stihl and Husqvarna fire chainsaws and I am certified at the A level. On the fireline, I utilize, maintain, clean and sharpen to factory specifications all line construction hand tools such as; Shovel, Pulaski, McLeod, Rhino and Rogue Hoe. I am responsible for the installation of progressive hose lays at times of need utilizing 1-1/2” fire hose, gated wyes, inline tees, nozzles and other appliances if needed. I assist the captain in performing daily preventative maintenance checks on the fire apparatus as well as on all fire equipment. I clean, wash, wax and detail the apparatus on a weekly basis. I participate in weekly physical fitness hikes as well as weekly line construction drills. I assist in daily camp projects and maintenance and ensure that the camp is presentable at all times. In addition to fighting wildland fires, I participate in sand bagging assignments, trail maintenance, brush clearing and chipping.
