Physics Teacher
September 1996 to June 2015
Woodland Hills High School - Pittsburgh, PA
  • Innovative delivery of curriculum: Focus on in-depth conceptual and qualitative subject comprehension, prior to quantitative problem solving. Emphasis is given from the onset on laws and conservation principles, and their "disguised" manifestations. The strong conceptual focus significantly increases students' comprehension and retention of material, which is reflected in better comprehension and successful completion of applied, quantitative problem-solving;
  • Seamless and logical sequence of topics: New topics are "weaved" into former ones by stretch or analysis, often through "what if?" (proposed) questions and activities, always returning to physics' laws and conservation principles.
  • Systematic use of Marzano's educational model: compare/contrast activities, charts, diagrams, linguistic to/from non-linguistic concept translation (including textual to mathematical), among others.
  • Multiple Learning Styles: Variety of learning/teaching styles in instructional delivery and assessments, including formal exams.
  • Instructional delivery: Via carefully developed PowerPoint presentations, tutorials, and a variety of assessments. Gauging, adaptation and further instructional delivery are regulated by the systematic use of formative assessments.
  • Supplementation of classroom instruction: Deliberate, with short activities that bring the concept under study to life (besides demonstrations). Each activity is carefully planned to elicit high-level reasoning, cement fundamental principles, as well as challenge misconceptions.
  • Unique laboratory exercises: I design labs that are innovative, relevant, rich and open-ended, often related to students' day-to-day experiences.
  • Extra-curricular support: Supplement students' learning by developing extra materials targeting necessary skills in science such as problem solving strategies, and data reduction and error analysis (among others).
  • Systematic planning and preparation for statewide assessments: I developed and implemented PSSA-friendly science rubrics, integrated Language Arts, and emphasized algebraic problem solving (including proofs), prior to and after state testing.
  • Improved grading system: Developed a grading system that rewarded the thorough completion of formative assessments. Its implementation skewed overall grades towards the 80th percentile and above, while still maintaining high educational standards. The system increased the depth and level of the learning experience by a) providing exposure to a wider variety of problems; b) uncovering misconceptions and other issues and c) rewarding meaningful and focused student effort. Asa teacher, I was able to immediately assess the level and type of proficiency of each student, and provide accurate and quick feedback.
  • Multidisciplinary lessons and assessments: Contributed with colleagues from various departments to create innovative lessons with non-traditional disciplines, such as home economics, foreign languages and social studies.
  • Individualized instruction and assessment: Developed a system to efficiently, reliably and timely handle and score a variety of concurrent projects, labs and/or assessments. Developed rubrics and protocols to accompany each task.
  • Hold students accountable for learning outcomes: Empower students to take responsibility for their own learning, while supporting their efforts in that regard.
  • Contributed to curriculum development.
