At my time studying for my B.A at Purchase. I did two quantitative experiments and one Literature Review. The first experiment was done on qualtrics in Research Methods I. I chose to do my experiment on Borderline Personality Disorder. However, this was too difficult to accomplish with an IAT and was not within the guidelines of the schools policy. So, my IAT was used to measure underlying judgments or attitudes about ones own self esteem. It measures self vs. Other associated with positive vs. Negative attitudes. My hypothesis was that participants would have faster reaction times on the incongruity trials of self/Negative and other/positive.v
In my second Research Methods Class, we were split into groups for an experiment. This time we had to take a topic. The topic our group had was multitasking. Once we came up with our groups general hypothesis, we each came up with our own. I initially hypothesized, before my professor told me to go with what the literature said, was that the participants who completed all three tasks, the memory card game, the memory card game with music and the memory card game while being asked questions who answered on their demographic questionnaires that they had some form of learning disability would perform better at multitasking than those who did not have a learning disability. Our control group just preformed the test once. My initial hypothesis was correct. During this we had to create an IRB for approval, consent forms, a literature review and conduct the experiment, gather the data, run the data then write out the rest of the report.
For my senior project, I opted to do one large literature review. I started with the concept of adoption and mental illness. The final result was that adoption can be a variable in the development of psychological disorders. However not always. As researchers continue, they are finding a narrowing of the gap between adoptees and non-adoptees. Although adoptees do seek mental health treatment and are more likely to have mental illness due to genetic factors and psychosocial factors. The end result of my literature had over 30 articles and was over 30 pages. My research on this topic is not nearly done. I plan on continuing it.
