Work History
Connections Academy - High School Principal
Salt Lake City Or Home-Based, UT, 07/2004 - Current
As principal I have been a leader in the development of Star City High School becoming a leader in STEM education that has been recognized at the state and national levels. Over 50% of our current students are enrolled in PLTW STEM courses. In addition to these numbers we will administer over 450 Advanced Placement exams to our students this school year. These numbers are a result of us becoming an Arkansas Advanced Initiative for Math and Science School in 2011.Through this initiative we went from about 35 students in A.P. courses in 2011 to over 250 today.Five years ago we initiated a plan to become a school with 1 to 1 devices. By prioritizing limited funding we reached our goal during the current school year. Most faculty members have embraced the use of Google classroom and fully integrated the use of these devices in daily learning. We are currently involved in the process of innovations that will create even more opportunities for our students through our Student Choice Academy. Students in this academy will experience blended learning opportunities, flexible seat time and flexible locations. Each student will have an individualized learning plan that satisfies his/her needs. As the building leader at SCHS I am proud of working with numerous teacher leaders and assistants and the capacity that has been developed in each. We have done this through the use of various teams and professional learning community processes. A master schedule has been created that allows for core teachers to have a prep period and team period every day. Our schedule provides a daily 30 minute period which is used for tier II interventions and enrichment. We also have procedures in place such as our School Intervention Team to address possible tier III interventions. Our school has established structures and processes need to address RTI.I am most proud of the culture transformation at Star City High School which has seen a continuous increase in children of poverty enrolling in rigorous course offerings and a steady decrease in discipline referrals.
