My personal background in the landscaping industry has been something that I have recently stumbled upon. I began taking classes last year at Kirkwood Community College. Some examples of the classes I have taken are: Hardscape Installation, Equipment Operations, Landscape Design, Irrigation Installation, Irrigation Design, Sustainable Site Management, Plant ID 1 & 2, Plant Material Maintenance, and many more. I have done many projects around campus for Kirkwood in our program as well. Projects included installing a pervious paver walkway, loading dock retaining wall, repair to a tiered retaining wall, as well as INLA service day in which some students went to the capital and offered our services to bring back a more appealing green look around the capital building. I will be attending the PLANET landscape construction convention in Alabama coming up in March to also further learn of better techniques and product knowledge.
Starting with my high school career my accomplishments were being in the National Honor Society, as well as all academic varsity athlete in both soccer and wrestling. I have received many scholarships in my college career, but most notably the Iowa Natural Landscaping Association scholarship that is given out to four landscaping students in the state of Iowa. I was also the president of the Horticulture Club in my last year as a student.
My responsibilities included selling everything from power tools to plants. Maintaining plant health was a big part of the job to ensure that the customers received a good product. Working with all the tools as well helped to further understand how each tool worked. I was also part of a display patio block installation project inside our store.
Responsibilities as a student included installing, and repairing existing landscapes around campus. We did fall clean-ups, and also installed hardscapes to help raise money for our horticulture club.
In class I was the president of the Horticulture Club which included leading meetings and coming up with ideas to raise money for our club. My current GPA before my last semester of classes is a 3.26, and I have been on the dean's list every semester at school.
