Experience
01/2012 to Present
Graduate Research Assistant Norc At The University Of Chicago Easton, MD,
  • Rare-Earth-Free Permanent Magnets for Electrical Vehicle Motors and Wind Turbine Generators (Sponsored by U.S.
  • Department of Energy, ARPA-E) Collaborated with other 9 research teams under Pacific Northwestern National Laboratory (PNNL) to develop rare-earth free permanent magnets; provided supports to other teams on materials characterizations and data analysis.
  • Constructed, validated, and maintained an air-free synthetic system for nanomaterials synthesis; interfaced with team members through all phases of the research projects, from conception, to implementation, to the final presentation of the data.
  • Proposed a new process of magnetic self-assembly for the synthesis of SrFe12O19/FeCo and MnBi/FeCo core/shell nanoparticles, and enhanced the magnetization with 30% and 25%, respectively; profiled patents for the new process.
  • Investigated and built the relationship between the morphology and magnetic properties of different magnetic nanoparticles, including hollow mesoporous BaFe12O19, and monodispersed FeCo (cubic and spherical) particles.
  • Trained and coached laboratory personnel, monitored daily lab operation and maintenance, quoted and purchased lab facilities and consumables.
08/2010 to 12/2011
Graduate Research Assistant Norc At The University Of Chicago Field, KY,
  • Catalytic Pre-combustion of Alternative Fuels for Use in High Efficiency Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) Engines (Sponsored by U.S.
  • Department of Energy) Designed and developed a novel Rh/γ-Al2O3 catalyst and set up a high performance methane catalytic reforming system in a continuous flow reactor.
  • Characterized the Rh/γ-Al2O3 catalysts with various techniques, including BET, XRD, TEM and TEM; optimized the catalyst design and running conditions in the practical experiments.
  • Applied methane catalytic reforming system to a HCCI Engine as a fuel source by collaborating with mechanical researchers and technicians.
08/2010 to 05/2014
Teaching Assistant/Undergraduate Research Supervisor Penn State University University Park, PA,
  • Trained 30 undergraduate students on system installation and report writing for Unit Operation experiments; ensured the experiment progress by maintaining process and personnel safety.
  • Research: Supervised 4 undergraduate students on 3 materials science and engineering projects; provided technical support for troubleshooting.
09/2009 to 06/2010
Undergraduate Research Assistant Tianjin University Of Science And Technology City, , China
  • Contributed to setting up laboratory scale air-free gas phase polymerization reaction system for polyethylene synthesis.
  • Independently conducted synthesis of polyethylene with glove box and Schlenk line systems.
