I've been working as an offshore commercial fisherman since 2007. My first commercial fishing job ever was in Kodiak, Alaska. I worked there for the summer after I graduated high school before starting my first year of college. I have experienced multiple fisheries, many vessels and learned many skills on my path towards a career. I settled into a steady job fishing for lobsters for five years. I grew through the ranks and was promoted to First Mate, where I grew towards Captainship. I changed focus and began working on offshore scallop boats. Once again I grew through the ranks and have recently been promoted to First Mate. An offshore scallop boat with a full-time permit is a $1,000,000.00 operation. The boat I work on is registered at 81 feet long and is made of steel. I am required to be extremely responsible. I operate the vessel when the captain sleeps which means I'm in charge of seven human lives, the engine room, operation of the hydraulics, navigation, weight distribution, catching product, cooking meals, and of course overall safety.
