Background: The Elevate Gap Program at the YMCA of the Rockies is an opportunity for recent high school and college graduates and those in-between to broaden their horizons, gain work experience, and build community. The program places a heavy emphasis on community service and experience with the outdoors. After working on the Staff Experience Team in the Human Resources Office, I was presented with the opportunity to take over the Elevate Gap Program as the program supervisor for the Fall 2021 semester (they knew I always intended to return to school in the Spring). I planned and oversaw every aspect of the program, from hiring the individuals who would take part, to designing and implementing the activities that made up the program. The following are some of the work responsibilities the position entailed.

  • Select and hire program participants; responsibilities included determining candidate viability, scheduling and conducting interviews, initiating and following through with the hiring process, and evaluating work performance
  • Coordinate with department heads to establish work schedules that allow for program participation and assign shifts to program participants
  • Oversee the hiring, training, and mentoring of a program facilitator
  • Develop an overall program budget; plan and monitor expenditures for group activities and events while remaining within the budgetary limits of the program
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement program activities and enrichment opportunities, including weekly excursions, volunteer projects, and two separate week-long camping trips
