Hillsborough County Public Schools have strengthened my leadership skills. I have developed and learned many skill sets. Namely, one of my newest skillset is leading a group of twenty-seven seven year old’s and their parents and guardians through a year of virtual teaching.
Virtual teaching was very challenging. However, I was able to foster a community that values teamwork, open conversation and dialog. I was able to learn new modalities of lesson instruction and delivery to teach my students ( and their parents) and in return, my students were able to become leaders and masters of something few seven year old’s have ever done before, virtual learning.
I also have two years of experience leading in an union environment, serving as a union representative, and using my leadership skills to develop future union representatives and leaders.
During my two-year employment with the School Board of Polk County I held the title of second and fourth grade classroom teacher.
While employed as an educator with the school board I developed my own personal leadership skills as well as those of my students. I created a classroom atmosphere where students enjoyed learning and coming to school every day, A classroom where students felt challenged and worked with their peers in group settings to develop a wide range of skill sets, critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students in my classroom felt empowered and a sense of accomplishment. I used best practices and many different modalities to deliver instruction in my classroom.
In Polk County I worked with a very diverse population of students, families and community members. I had to work very hard to find creative ways to include and involve all stakeholders. I helped to foster critical life skills in the lives of the young students in my classroom so that one day they can grow up to be leaders in their jobs and communities too.
Throughout my nine years of employment with the City of Livonia's Parks and Recreation department I was afforded many opportunities and the ability to work in several different roles within the aquatics division. During my time with the Livonia Parks and Recreation Department I was able to develop my skill set. Lifeguard, swim instructor and aquatic supervisor were the titles I was able to hold while employed there.
In my most recent role as aquatic supervisor I was able to lead and teach of team of lifeguards. I was able to use my skill set and background as a teacher to deliver and teach the content and skills needed for lifeguards to accurately and competently execute their job duties. In this position I held twice monthly trainings for lifeguards to practice and sharpen their skills. I had to develop a plan and deliver instruction during all trainings using a variety of different modalities. During these trainings I developed a team that would work strongly together as a group, and drew upon their individual strengths to develop their own personal skills and goals.
While completing my bachelor's degree at Grand Valley State University I was afforded the opportunity to work as a student building supervisor within the University's campus recreation department and lead a diverse group of student workers.
When holding this title and working in this role I oversaw building operations, led and developed a diverse group of student workers, and communicated effectively with patrons, staff, and management. Throughout my time in this position, I critiqued our strengths and weakness, developed and shared ideas as to how we could improve on our weaknesses, researched best practices that aligned with our departments missions and values and discussed these and other important items at monthly meetings.
In this role, as with my aquatic supervisor role, it was imperative that all new hires had the literature and, on the job, training they needed to be successful. I verified and provided them with the correct materials and conducted their on-the-job training and shadowing.
