As an elementary teacher, I established the first elementary greenhouse in Osceola County in 1990. This has become a project that has been adopted by other schools in Central Florida throughout the years. This project allowed the students to learn about agriculture and propagation of plants. Walmart donated plants to our fourth grade classroom that would have otherwise been discarded and the students repotted and monitored their progress. In the spring, we had a fundraiser for our project and the students sold all of the plants and trees they had cared for and raised over $500. I also received a Teacherrific Award from Disney for $500 for the classroom and $500 for the school.
In 1993, I wanted to teach my 4th grade students about different species of animals so with the approval of my administration, I established "A Zoo for a Better You". This project would have two areas of focus. First, to encourage positive classroom behavior throughout the school and second, to teach my students zoology, the study of animal biology. We had a chinchilla, a chicken we raised from an egg, a love bird, a rabbit, and an iguana. The students were put in small groups and then given an animal to care for. They were assigned the task of researching information on their animal. Once a month, teachers were encouraged to send one student from their classroom that showed positive behavior in their classroom to visit "A Zoo for a Better You". My students would then teach the visiting students about their animal. This was a huge success and the students enjoyed the interaction with the animals while learning about them.
1994 I facilitated a community support center by implementing a "School Help Closet" which allowed the school along with my 4th grade students to help needy families in the area. Walmart and other stores provided can food, dry goods, health products, baby clothing and food, children's and adult clothing and shoes. This project even reached out to other counties to help. The students would work once a week in the closet to organize and inventory items. Walmart gave our school a Community Award of $500 for the project. I also receive a Teacherrific Award from Disney for $5,000.
