Director of Special EducationAmarillo ISD - Amarillo, TX
  • I am the director for Special Education, Section 504 and Dyslexia.  In addition. Amarillo ISD is the fiscal agent for the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf.  That program is under my direction as well.
  • I supervise 200+ teachers, 250+ teacher assistants, 41diagnosticians, 35 speech language pathologists, 30 itinerant service providers and 6 program administrators.
  • I am responsible for writing the federal grant, budgeting all funds, ensuring proper expenditures, dealing with all personnel matters, working with parents and training all personnel in order to provide services to students with disabilities and ensure compliance with all federal, state and local laws, rules and policies.
07/2007 to 06/2011
Assistant Director, Instructional ServicesRegion 16 ESC - Amarillo, TX
  • This position started out as IDEA Liaison, then changed to IDEA Liaison/Grant Manager and finally become Assistant Director, Instructional Services.
  • I supervised 17 program specialists as well as office staff.
  • I provided and arranged appropriate trainings to support the needs of employees both internally and for the 63 school districts I served.
  • I wrote a large portion of the grants for which Region 16 ESC applies.
  • I negotiated approval of said grants and managed the budgets.
  • I acted as the Special Education Director for Region 16 and work closely with Special Education Directors in all areas related to the provision of services for students with disabilities, including accountability issues such as PBMAS, SPP and AYP.
  • Additionally, I evaluated escWorks reports and recommended program changes to the escWorks software application for Region 16 ESC.
07/1999 to 06/2007
Director of Special ServicesDumas ISD - Dumas, TX
  • The duties of this position changed from year to year.
  • At all times, I supervised my office staff, 25 teachers, 35 teacher assistants, 3 diagnosticians and 3 speech language pathologists.
  • At other times, in addition to these personnel units, I also supervised an additional 10 teachers and 10 teacher assistants.
  • I was director of the following programs: Special Education; Title I, Parts A & C; Title II, Parts A & D; Title IV, Part A; Title V; Title VI; §504; Dyslexia; Bilingual/English as a Second Language (ESL); Title III; Optional Extended Year (OEY); Head Start; TANF; PEP (PRS Services); State Compensatory Education; Ed-Flex Waivers; Texas Educator Excellence Grant (TEEG); and High School Allotment, with Special Education being a constant.
  • As director of these programs/projects, I was responsible for completing the grant applications, developing and managing the budget, monitoring to ensure compliance with laws and guidelines and evaluating each program/project.
  • A major portion of the federal program work was, of course, accountability.
  • I was charged with both analyzing accountability data and developing plans to address any areas of concern.
  • To such end, I also was responsible for ensuring that the campus and district improvement plans were done accurately and that they addressed all needed areas.
  • In addition to these duties, I was the ADA compliance officer and wrote grants for Dumas ISD.
