Shop Worker, Brakeman and FlagmanHawaiian Railway Society － Ewa Beach, HIMy general duties at the Hawaiian Railway started with me working in the Maintenance Shed assisting with repairing and restoring vintage freight and passenger rolling stock along with caring for and maintaining vintage locomotives. I quickly moved up to being part of the train crew as a Flagman, hopping off and on the locomotive to flag the train across major grade crossings. After being certified I started training to become a Brakeman, which included radio communications from the rear of the train during reverse movements, coupling and uncoupling the locomotive from the train, tying down hand brakes, and assisting with yard switching. During Brakeman training, I was also tasked with checking over the engine and passenger cars each morning before warming the engine up and then moving the train from the yard over to the depot, as well as putting the train away after the rides were through for the day. I gained valuable knowledge quickly on how to maintain and repair rail cars and locomotives while also learning how to perform the duties of the Brakeman, while also learning how to operate the locomotive.
